Netflix confirms that production has started on the final ‘Heartbreak High’ season

It has been confirmed once more that Netflix has cancelled the hit Australian teen drama, Heartbreak High. The show will end after the upcoming third season, which is currently in production. It follows on from an explosive ending to the second instalment and continued hopes that this success would lead to Netflix changing its mind about the future of the drama.

Notably, the comedy-drama is a loose reboot of the 1994 Australian series of the same name, which ran until 1999. That show was itself a spin-off of the 1993 feature film The Heartbreak Kid, which starred Alex Dimitriades, Nico Lathouris, Doris Younane, Scott Major and Katherine Halliday.

The reboot of Heartbreak High, which originally aired its first season in 2022, follows a group of students and teachers at Hartley High as they navigate romance, racial tension and other complicated topics. Boasting an ensemble cast that includes the likes of Ayesha Madon, Thomas Weatherall, Bryn Chapman Parish, Asher Yasbincek, and many more, it was instantly well received. It was so lauded that Netflix renewed it just a month after it debuted.

The second season premiered on April 11th this year and continued to find acclaim for its representation of race, sexuality, gender and neurodivergence. Making good on the foundations laid by the first outing, season two was among the top ten shows in over 53 countries on Netflix.

A well-executed and thoughtful teen drama made for the contemporary era, there’s no surprise that the story and characters of Heartbreak High will be greatly missed by fans who have become attached due to their resonance.

Netflix Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) wrote on Instagram: “Oi, SLTs! Production has begun for the third and final season of #HeartbreakHigh. It’s time for Hartley High’s graduating class to say goodbye to school! Yet when a revenge prank goes horribly wrong, Amerie and her mates must cover up their secret or risk losing everything…”

In May, Que Minh Luu, director of content at Netflix ANZ, said the following about the upcoming third season, pointing to what’s in store following the ending of season two: “She never got the letter – but now we get to see what happens next!

She continued: “Renewing ‘Heartbreak High’ for its final season is a major point of pride for us at Netflix. It has been a joy to work with the utterly cooked creative minds behind our favourite Aussie YA show and to bring our stories, our culture and our in-jokes to all the fans here at home and throughout the world. See you at muck-up day.”

Despite the sad news that Heartbreak High is ending, fans look forward to seeing how the plotlines are tied up and wonder whether this final outing will be longer than the previous two eight-episode seasons.
