Netflix confirm release date for hotly-anticipated season two of ‘Monster’

Following the success of Dahmer Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story in 2022, Netflix and showrunner Ryan Murphy have now announced the release date for the second entry into the anthology series.

In 2022, Murphy linked up with Netflix for the first season of his true crime series, Monster. The debut instalment starred Evan Peters, who previously worked with Murphy on American Horror Story, as the Milwaukee Monster, Jeffrey Dahmer. Molly Ringwald and Richard Jenkins appeared in supporting roles.

The Jeffrey Dahmer Story performed well on Netflix and during award season, receiving a vast number of nominations and even securing a Golden Globe win for Peters’ performance. The initial success secured Murphy two more seasons of the show, which Netflix said will focus on other “monstrous figures who have impacted society” in a press release.

Now, Netflix has announced the release date for the second entry into the anthology, which will arrive on September 19th, 2024. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story will follow the story of the two titular brothers who murdered their parents in 1989.

“While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune,” a synopsis reads, “The brothers claimed — and remain adamant to this day, as they serve life sentences without the possibility of parole — that their actions stemmed out of fear from a lifetime of physical, emotional and sexual abuse at the hands of their parents.”

According to the synopsis, the new season will dive into the “historic case that took the world by storm, paved the way for audiences’ modern-day fascination with true crime and in return asks those audiences: Who are the real monsters?”

Nicholas Chavez and Cooper Koch will take on the title roles of Lyle and Eriz Menendez respectively, while Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny have been cast in the parental roles as Jose and Kitty Menendez. Nathan Lane, Ari Graynor and Leslie Grossman will also appear in the new season.

So, when is the release date?

A short teaser for the new season has also been unveiled alongside the date announcement, which shows the two brothers walking into a mansion with shotguns. “On August 20, 1989, Lyle and Eriz Menendez murdered their parents,” the overlaid text states.

A third instalment of the anthology series has also been green-lit, but at this stage, the subjects of the next season are yet to be confirmed.
