Netflix confirm new 'Anna Karenina' series to be shot in Russia

An adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s legendary novel Anna Karenina from Netflix is set to be shot in Russia as the first original drama to come from the country for the streaming platform.

Svetlana Khodchenkova is set to star in the new adaptation of the classic text and take the lead role of Netflix’s first-ever Russian original drama series, titled ANNA K. It is already gaining some serious hype.

Khodchenkova will take the title role for the series following starring turns in The Wolverine and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. The show will see Netflix provide a project that is being billed as a modernised retelling of a literary classic.

The story focuses on Anna Karenina, the wife of the soon-to-be governor of the Russian city of St. Petersburg, who then dives into a romantic affair with Vronsky, the hero to a fortune.

The affair threatens to throw a host of different lives into disarray, and as the narrative unfurls across the Russian countryside and the metropolitan Makkah of St. Petersburg, it captures the hearts and minds of its audience, no matter the medium.

ANNA K will be directed by Valeriy Fedorovich, Evgeniy Nikishov, Natasha Merkulova, Aleksey Chupov, and Kantor. Fedorovich, Nikishov, Sergey Kornikhin, and Kantor will take on production duties.

Michael Azzolino, from Netflix, said: “The talented team of writers, directors and producers have crafted an imaginative and immersive series. We are excited to help bring their vision for this much-admired story to our members in Russia and the world.”

Fedorovich of 1-2-3 Production added: “This endeavour is beyond exciting and challenging, but since the backbone of the future series is based on one of the world’s fundamental pieces of literature dedicated to love, we are hopeful that we will be able to touch the hearts of viewers from Australia to Brazil.”

The most recent adaptation of the text was Keira Knightley’s star turn as the titular character, which you can watch in the trailer below.
