Netflix confirm Barry Keoghan for ‘Peaky Blinders’ movie

Irish actor Barry Keoghan is set to star alongside Cillian Murphy in Netflix’s upcoming Peaky Blinders movie.

The hit original BBC drama, which starred Cillian Murphy in the lead role as Birmingham gangster Tommy Shelby, ran for six seasons before departing from television screens in 2022. Even before the final series finished airing, speculation already began surrounding a potential spin-off movie, which has kicked into gear this year.

In January, the show’s creator Stephen Knight confirmed that he was in the process of finalising the script, telling the Radio Times, “I’m just working on the final bits of it at the moment.”

Elaborating on his process and plan, Knight added, “I just sit down at the keyboard and start. It’s a bit like having a dream, for me. You sit there and all this stuff comes, and then you read it back and think, ‘That’s pretty good – but where did it come from? The plan is to start shooting that in the middle of next year.”

As of yet, filming hasn’t begun but is expected to start shortly. In June, the Peaky Blinders movie, which is set to be released on Netflix, was officially confirmed and Murphy revealed that he would reprise his role as Shelby.

Murphy remarked: “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me…It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders.”

Additionally, the film’s director, Tom Harper, shared his joy at reconvening with Murphy for the movie, stating, “‘Peaky’ has always been a story about family – and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix”.

Since then, more information has begun to trickle out about the project, and Rebecca Ferguson was confirmed to be joining the cast. Now, Deadline has revealed Keoghan, best known for performances in Saltburn and The Banshees of Inisherin, will also be appearing in a prominent role.

However, while both Ferguson and Keoghan are confirmed to feature in the upcoming movie, the details of their characters are yet to be revealed.

When will the Peaky Blinders movie be released?

At this stage, the Peaky Blinders movie is still yet to start filming. However, in a recent promising update, Knight told the Liverpool Echo: “We start shooting a couple of weeks in Digbeth and it’s going to be mind-blowing.”

With shooting scheduled to begin in September, it looks likely that the film will arrive on screens at some point in 2025. However, this is yet to be confirmed, and there is still no official release date for Murphy’s return as Shelby.

In the same interview with the Liverpool Echo, Knight also discussed why Academy Award-winner Murphy is vital for a variety of reasons, stating, “He’s not just a great actor, he’s a great bloke. He leads the line in terms of attitude. He knows his stuff, he’s an absolute professional so to see that rewarded was wonderful.”
