Netflix announces unscripted series based on iconic board game ‘Clue’

Netflix is well-known for turning games into full-fledged shows, moreover, for the justice it does to their quality. Somewhere, that’s exactly what makes it the king of streaming platforms. And now it is officially bringing one of the world’s most beloved mystery games to life: Clue.

Netflix has announced a new unscripted competition series based on Clue, Hasbro’s classic “whodunit” board game. A game that has been fuelling family feuds and dinner table betrayals since 1949.

The upcoming series will turn Clue’s iconic murder mystery format into a real-life game of strategy and deduction. Contestants will get inside an elaborate, mansion-style setting where they’ll face a mix of both physical and mental challenges to uncover the answers to the game’s eternal three-part question.

What is Clue all about?

For those wondering what this three-part question is: it is so simple. Who committed the murder, where did it happen, and with what?

In each round, players will have to outthink and outplay one another while racing to piece the clues together. If you guess right, they’ll add money to the prize pot. But if you guess wrong, you can be eliminated from the game entirely. The competition will also bring back the game’s most famous suspects, including Colonel Mustard, Miss Scarlett, Professor Plum, and Mrs White, adding a nostalgic twist for anyone who’s ever accused their sibling of murder with a candlestick.

“Like so many families and friends over the years, we’ve gathered around the table trying to figure out who did it — making Clue a source of nostalgia that everyone shares,” said Jeff Gaspin, Vice President of Unscripted Series at Netflix. “Thanks to the incredible vision of our partners at Hasbro Entertainment, IPC, and B17, we’re delivering a fresh, imaginative whodunit competition that will invite today’s audiences into that iconic world.”

Behind the scenes, Clue is being produced by Hasbro Entertainment, The Intellectual Property Corporation (IPC) (the team behind Indian Matchmaking and With Love, Meghan), and B17 Entertainment, known for The History of Swear Words and On Brand With Jimmy Fallon.

Hasbro’s move into live-action adaptations has been picking up quite the momentum in recent years. Alongside Clue, the company is developing a Dungeons & Dragons TV series and a Monopoly game show, both in partnership with Netflix, so you know that Clue is going to be phenomenal. It also has Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble adaptations currently running on The CW.

The original Clue board game has sold over 150 million copies worldwide since its launch. Following that, it spawned multiple spin-offs, video games, and even a 1985 cult-favourite film directed by Jonathan Lynn. The movie, starring Tim Curry as Wadsworth the butler, became famous for its dark humour and multiple alternate endings. It’s a format that still influences modern mystery storytelling today.

Netflix hasn’t yet announced a release date for the Clue series, but the game is officially on. Whether you’re team Miss Scarlett or swear by Professor Plum, it’s almost time to put your detective hat on.
