Netflix announces new animated Ghostbusters series set for 2027

Who you gonna call? Netflix, apparently. Because Netflix has officially announced Ghostbusters: Night Shift, a brand-new animated series based on the massively loved paranormal franchise. Yup! The Ghostbusters are coming to Netflix. And you don’t even have to wait that long because it is scheduled to premiere in 2027.

The project is the latest expansion of a universe that has spent more than forty years battling and trapping supernatural creatures and turning proton packs into proper pop-culture legends.

For long-time fans, this announcement means a bit more than you might think, because Ghostbusters and animation go way further back together than a lot of people realise. While the franchise first came on the big screen back in 1984, it was animation that helped turn it into something much bigger than just a film series. Saturday mornings belonged to The Real Ghostbusters for years, introducing a whole generation of kids to haunted houses and slime-covered monsters. Then later on, Extreme Ghostbusters kept things ticking along for a younger crowd.

That’s why Night Shift feels like more than just another spin-off. In a lot of ways, it is a return to one of the formats that has helped keep Ghostbusters alive and relevant across generations.

Another thing that has got fans excited is the creative team behind it. Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have brought together a group of producers who already have strong links to the franchise, including Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan, and Dan Aykroyd. If you watched the recent films, those first two names will definitely ring a bell. Reitman and Kenan were heavily involved in Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the films that introduced the franchise to a new audience while still respecting the originals.

Jason Reitman’s involvement feels especially important. His dad, Ivan Reitman, directed the original Ghostbusters films and played a massive role in shaping what the franchise became. Long before he stepped back into the family business, Jason had already built a strong reputation through films like Juno and Up in the Air.

Gil Kenan’s no slouch either. Before getting involved with Ghostbusters, he made a name for himself with Monster House, an animated horror-comedy that showed he really knows how to balance spooky stuff with a wider audience. That’s why he is perfect for this series.

Netflix hasn’t given away any story details just yet, which obviously leaves fans with loads of questions. Is it gonna focus on a completely new team of ghost hunters? Could some familiar faces pop up? Right now, nobody outside the production seems to know.

One thing we do know, though, is that the franchise is going into another new chapter at a time when interest in Ghostbusters is still dead strong. And with Sony Pictures Animation handling the project, Ghostbusters: Night Shift is already carrying some pretty big expectations. Fans will have to hang on until 2027 to see how it all turns out, but the return of animated Ghostbusters adventures is enough on its own to get plenty of people interested.

After all, ghosts never stay away for long.
