Netflix announces a series adaptation of Maria Dąbrowska’s ‘Nights & Days’
A new series adaptation of Maria Dąbrowska’s Nights & Days is officially set at Netflix with Kamila Tarabura attached as director.
Cameras are expected to start rolling soon for Nights & Days, which will capture the four seasons of Barbara and Bogumil Niechcic’s relationship.
Set at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Nights & Days follows the daily life of the Niechcic relationship, including its high points and low points, small and great obstacles, or urge and yearning for what has already been lost.
Romantic Barbara and practical Bogumil, through their distinct language of love and differences, can influence contemporary relationships, highlighting universal conflicts and dilemmas that have been carried forward through generations. While Nights & Days is undoubtedly a classic story of complex feelings, the adaptation will undeniably be a “portrait of a woman” above everything else – “unpredictable and full of many contradictions.”
“Our interpretation of Maria Dąbrowska’s masterpiece is an honest and emotional reflection on the myth of romantic love and the eternal battle between expectations and reality,” says Tarabura, the series director. “It’s also a story about building a long-term relationship, about the fact that a relationship is work that can bear fruit throughout life. Barbara faces many universal dilemmas concerning sacrifice for marriage and family, giving up her own dreams, and the search for happiness.”
Poland is at the heart of Nights & Days, which encompasses not only the landscape accompanying the adaptation but also the backdrop of the show’s visual language and emotional complexity. With the adaptation, the creators want to construct a bridge between generations – one that connects those who fell in love with this story in its classic form and those who are about to fall in love with it for the very first time.
“Polish culture is a treasury of stories that have captivated us for generations. The story shown in Nights & Days is no different – it still charms us, becoming a timeless reflection on ordinary human dilemmas. That is why, at Netflix, we want to tell it anew to viewers, including future generations, through the talent and contemporary sensitivity of the young creators who are working on this production,” said Netflix Program Director for Central and Eastern Europe, Łukasz Kłuskiewicz.
Following the success of Forgotten Love and the massive anticipation surrounding the upcoming Netflix series based on Prus’s ‘The Doll,’ Nights & Days marks another epic showcase of Polish culture on the screen, underscoring the novel’s potential for rediscovery.
While Netflix has yet to unveil a release date alongside its cast details, a series description is available for Nights & Days, which follows Barbara Ostrzeńska, a proud but down-and-out noblewoman, who learns that the man she loves is marrying another woman. Desperate to escape spinsterhood, she ties the knot with Bogumił Niechcic, a humble former insurgent and property manager. Although they are polar opposites by nature, they build a life in the countryside over the span of 30 years, shown on screen, as Barbara’s lost status and yearnings clash with her lived reality.
