Netflix acquires Danny Boyle’s ‘Ink’ about Larry Lamb and Rupert Murdoch
In one of the most high-profile acquisitions of 2026, Netflix recently snagged Academy Award winner Danny Boyle’s Ink, which chronicles the birth of Rupert Murdoch’s press empire.
The film is set to hit select theatres on December 11th, 2026, before its scheduled touchdown on Netflix in the US and Latin America on January 8th, 2027.
Ink, based on James Graham’s Tony-nominated play of the same name, will have its world premiere as the opening-night selection of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, where it is a competitor for the Golden Lion. The upcoming feature is also confirmed for a Canadian debut at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Boyle has roped in a star-studded A-list ensemble to breathe life into the screen adaptation, with Guy Pearce portraying a 30-something Rupert Murdoch and Jack O’Connell starring as editor Larry Lamb, the working-class newspaper journalist who helped Murdoch turn The Sun into people’s steamroller.
In addition to the LA Confidential and Sinners stars, Claire Foy appears in Ink as Jules Davies.
Two-time Oscar-winner Boyle, who bagged ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Picture’ wins for Slumdog Millionaire, directs the movie from Graham’s screenplay and produces Ink alongside Tracey Seaward, Tessa Ross, and Michael Ellenberg. Most recently, he reunited with screenwriter Alex Garland for 28 Years Later.
For those curious, Ink details and follows a ragtag group of misfits and visionaries who banded together to fan the flames of a new kind of news – one that wouldn’t just give people what they want but, in the process, would alter the very face of the world they inhabit today.
Ink’s financial responsibilities are entirely handled by Studiocanal, which also oversees its worldwide sales. The global rollout kicks off on January 6th in France and Belgium, followed by the Netherlands, Australia, and New Zealand on January 7th and the UK and Poland on January 8th. The film will be available in Italy starting February 18th and in Germany on February 25th, 2027.
While the film’s arrival syncs heavily with the forthcoming award season, this is not the only acquisition Netflix made headlines for. It also recently snagged the rights to La Bola Negra, which shared the ‘Best Director’ award at the Cannes Film Festival, and Gentle Monster. So, keep an eye out!
