Netflix acquire Vince Vaughn and Stephen Chbosky comedy ‘Nonnas’
Director Stephen Chbosky will deliver his new feature comedy movie Nonnas starring Vince Vaughn, Susan Sarandon, Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire and Brenda Vaccaro to Netflix following the streaming service’s recent acquisition.
The film focuses on a man who opens an Italian restaurant with a group of local old ladies for chefs following the death of his mother. Linda Cardellini, Drea De Matteo, Joe Manganiello, Michael Rispoli and Campbell Scott complete the cast while Fifth Season are serving as the studio.
Producer Gigi Pritzker recently said in a statement, “We are delighted that Nonnas has found a great home at Netflix, where it will be widely seen and enjoyed. The film focuses on family, food and community, and in this turbulent time those are things we can all celebrate.”
The head of Fifth Season, Christopher Slager, added, “Once again, Stephen Chbosky has brought magic to the screen in this heartfelt and joyous film. We cannot wait for audiences everywhere to sit down at the table with us and share this fantastic film thanks to our partners at Netflix.”
Chbosky is known for writing the live-action version of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast as well as directing Dear Evan Hansen and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. His next film is a comedy, but it’s not yet known to what extent the comedy will go.
Vince Vaughn had recently claimed that Hollywood producers are scared of giving the go-ahead to R-rated comedy movies and that executives are worried about being fired. As such, the raunchy comedy that Vaughn launched his career with is less prominent today than it was back then.
“They just overthink it,” Vaughn recently said in an interview on Hot Ones. “And it’s like, it’s crazy. You get these rules. “The people in charge don’t want to get fired more so than they’re looking to do something great, so they want to kind of follow a set of rules that somehow get set in stone, that don’t really translate.”
The actor had added, “But as long as they follow them, they’re not going to lose their job because they can say,’ Well, look, I made a movie off the board game Payday, so even though the movie didn’t work, you can’t let me go, right?'”
It’s unlikely that Chbosky’s comedy Nonnas will be R-rated, but Netflix subscribers will still be grateful to have fresh Vince Vaughn arrive on their screens, whatever the project.
