Netflix accused of using Kate Middleton’s cancer to promote new Prince Harry series

Fans of the royal family have made their anger at Netflix known due to the seemingly strange timing of the announcement of Prince Harry’s latest documentary series, Polo. In what was either an unfortunate coincidence or an immense oversight, it materialised less than two hours after the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton’s significant cancer update.

After a period of speculation following abdominal surgery, Middleton first announced her battle with cancer in March. In a video message filmed by the BBC, she also revealed that she had been undergoing chemotherapy since February. Understandably, her health saw her take medical leave from public engagements, but in June, she made her first appearances at Trooping The Colour after stating in a letter the previous day that she was still having treatment.

Sharing a video on September 9th, Kate has now revealed that she is cancer-free. In the poignant clip featuring her entire family, she said: “As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment”.

“Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown. The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you,” she continued.

Middleton added: “With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything. This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved.”

The royal maintained that her focus is now doing what she can to stay “cancer-free”. Although she is finished with chemotherapy, her path to full recovery is long, and she must take each day as it comes, she said, but now has a “new appreciation of life.”

She also thanked the support the family have received during this dark period. Concluding: “To all those who are continuing their own cancer journey — I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand. Out of darkness, can come light, so let that light shine bright.”

Given the importance of Princess Kate’s announcement, many fans have said that they feel Netflix were cynically cashing in on the trending topic when announcing Polo. Given the divisive nature of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for those who find themselves on the other side of the royal debate, the streamer left itself open for much criticism.

POLO is a new documentary series that follows elite global players and offers an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the fast-paced world of the sport. From Archewell Productions and Boardwalk Pictures. Premiering this December,” the post stated.

Regardless of what the intention behind the post was, Netflix should have learned by now that the royal family is a particularly touchy subject for those who abide. They won’t mind though; Polo will likely still rake in the viewers when it arrives.

Polo will be available to stream on Netflix in December, 2024.
