Streaming giant Netflix has announced its plans for the 2021 film slate, revealing ambitious plans to deliver brand new movie content every single week.
The major commitment to Netflix originals is made up of 70 unique titles, 52 of which are English language live-action alongside one trilogy, eight animated features and 10 different foreign cinema pictures.
“We have found our way into the business with some incredible, world-class filmmakers,” Scott Stuber, head of Netflix’s film section, stated. “People saying, ‘You’ll never be able to do it,’ was, personally, the easiest way to make me go do it.”
“We’re most excited about the accumulation of different things,” Stuber added in an interview with Deadline. “We like our continuation in the YA space with All The Boys and Kissing Booth in a genre we’ve helped reignite, this Fear Street trilogy we’ve got with Chernin Entertainment, as we work out the cadence of how we release them. It’s something we’ve never been able to do before, where they are in close proximity and you can see a film trilogy in short order as opposed to the usual every two years. We had a big year in action last year, and we’re excited about Red Notice and the idea of making a big global PG-13 action movie with this group of talent should be a big moment for us.
“I’m excited about Zack Snyder coming back around on the zombie genre he and I worked on in our early days with Dawn of the Dead at Universal, and Army of the Dead is going to be fun. I’m excited about The Harder They Fall, a Western with Idris Elba and Regina King and Jay-Z producing and doing the music for us and reinventing that genre, and Don’t Look Up with McKay and Leo and Meryl and the all-star cast he put together. These are great films that will allow us to make a lot of noise this year. I’m thrilled to have Jane Campion’s next film, she’s someone I always looked up to and getting to work with her has been a true highlight for me and the team. And Lin-Manuel, to be the home of his directing debut, is a big moment for us as a company. It’s nice to come back in the new year and feel like you’ve got the opportunity to generate some excitement.”
Netflix are committing to a wide variety of genres, including a big promotion around Halle Berrys’ Netflix debut with her film Bruised, Adam McKay’s star-studded film Don’t Look Up, Sam Levinson’s highly-anticipated film Malcolm & Marie plus many more in a 70-title collection.
“Netflix will bring you a new movie every week featuring the biggest stars including Leonardo DiCaprio, Sandra Bullock, Dwayne Johnson, Idris Elba, Meryl Streep, Zendaya, Jennifer Lawrence, Ryan Reynolds, Jennifer Garner, Gal Gadot, Dave Bautista, Naomi Watts, Jake Gyllenhaal, John David Washington and Octavia Spencer,” the company said in a statement, before adding: “And films from your favourite filmmakers like Zack Snyder, Nora Fingscheidt, Joe Wright, Antoine Fuqua, Shawn Levy, Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman and the directorial debuts from Halle Berry and Lin-Manuel Miranda.”
