‘Monopoly’ reality competition series bought by Netflix
Netflix has obtained the rights to a new reality competition based on the classic board game Monopoly. After a competitive bidding process, Netflix locked in the reality show.
The new deal is Netflix’s latest effort to increase the number of unscripted shows it hosts on the platform. Given the success of recent reality programmes, the streaming service intends to use more broad, big-ticket reality shows that will work well on the site.
Some of the reality shows that Netflix has had success with recently include Squid Game: The Challenge, a gameshow based on their equally successful drama, Squid Game. They are also working on a competition called The Golden Ticket, which will be a series set in the world of Willy Wonka.
The new Monopoly series will bring the legendary board game to life in the setting of a social experiment. The game will take place on the fine line between capitalism and chaos, as players will need to employ cutthroat tactics to dominate it.
Viewers will already be very familiar with the game by the time the series is released, given that almost half a billion copies have been sold since its 1935 release. Mobile games are also proving increasingly popular among consumers.
This reality series is separate from a feature film adaptation of the game, which is currently in production at Lionsgate. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Mayday) are writing the script for the feature film.
More information about a potential release date for the new reality series will soon follow.
