'Money Heist' season 5: Release date, cast, plot and more

Red overalls and Anonymous masks galore, Money Heist, is the series set in Madrid where a charming and mysterious “El Professor” recruits an oddball and idiosyncratic group of eight to carry out heists in the Royal Mint of Spain as well as the Bank of Spain, dealing with hostages and police as well as other enemies while the Professor, the mastermind, conducts the entire heist. The show, which made the Italian folk song “Bella Ciao” an international sensation and sent pulsating energy through the veins of fans throughout all four seasons, is set to return for a fifth season according to rumour mills.

The show has not only subverted the typical heist genre but also given it a strong Spanish identity. Unlike every male-centric hypermasculine heist film, this Money Heist has plenty of strong female leads who change the course of the story with their shrewd cunning as well as wit. Elements of black comedy make the show a fun watch; it is set in a time period following the financial crisis of Spain which has often been interpreted as a rebellion against capitalism and an act of revenge against the government. It can be read as a gang of renegade Robin Hoods carrying out the heist for the betterment of the people. The layered characters with their ever-changing motives make the show even more intriguing and riveting.

We decided to confirm the same by delving deep into whatever resource was available regarding the fifth season of Money Heist and decided to curate this list, informing eager fans all that they need to know about the new season of the show that shall be streaming on Netflix soon.

Let’s get started.

Everything we know so far about Money Heist season 5:

What has happened so far?

In the fourth season of Money Heist, following the third season’s ominous foreboding that “the war had begun”, the robbers try to save Nairobi’s life but fail despite saving her initially. The police get ready to attack the bank once again.

The season concludes with Lisbon joining the gang and the Professor, who got Sierra fired after exposing the injustices carried out by the latter against Rio and Lisbon, being held at gunpoint by Sierra who started pursuing the Professor on her own. The series concludes with a renewed rendition of “Bella Ciao” which forms goosebumps on our skin.

Has Money Heist been renewed for a fifth season?

After the fourth season, the fans were devastated at the radio silence prevailing on Netflix’s part and feared that the show would not return for a fifth season despite Alexa Pina and his team confirming one over and over again. However, in August 2020, Netflix finally announced that the show would be returning for a fifth season which would bring the heist “to an end”, confirming that this would be the final season. According to one of the directors, Alex Rodrigo, the series would come to a close “in style as the fans imagine and dream”.

However, fans might have questions regarding why this is the final season and Pina had all the answers during the interview for Sky Rojo. As the Spanish newspaper Marca recorded, Pina confessed that rounding up the entire ensemble cast for the show was difficult due to their conflicting schedules. This is one of the main issues that shows with big casts usually face, especially when the actors are in increased demand.

When will the fifth season release on Netflix?

Since filming has already concluded, rumour mills were abuzz with the show’s allegedly returning in April 2021. However, there have been slight changes in the production schedule and the fifth season has been divided into two distinct halves for the release

It has been confirmed that Season 5 Volume 1 of Money Heist shall be arriving on the streaming platform on September 3, 2021 while on December 3, 2021, the second volume of the same season shall be available for streaming.

The announcement trailer sees the group engaging in combat while a cover of Linkin Park’s “In the End” plays in the background!

When will the trailer release?

On July 26, 2021, Money Heist confirmed via their official Twitter account that the trailer is set to drop on August 2, 2021. In the short 28-second video, the Professor appears to be chained and seems absolutely terrified.

As soon as the trailer is released, we shall update here.

What can we expect from the fifth season?

Alexa Pina has been an absolute delight, revealing their elaborate plans for the fifth season. “We’ve spent almost a year thinking about how to break up the band. How to put the Professor on the ropes. How to get into situations that are irreversible for many characters,” said Pina. He has promised fans that “the wild war” into which the “gang [will now] be pushed into” shall be reaching “its most extreme and savage levels” with the fifth season being the  “most epic and exciting season” where the gang shall face “irreversible situations” with no space for redemption or escape.

Redditors have flooded the platform with their own theories which suggest that Alicia, who has gone rogue, might be the ex-wife of the suave Berlin and might be faking her pregnancy. The fifth season shall mist definitely open once again in the bank where the group must work in the basement to melt gold into extractable balls before beginning their escape, bringing the heist to an end. However, it shall be interesting to note if the team is able to escape unscathed and lead normal civilian lives.

Will there be a spin-off series?

Fans have often posed this question to Pina demanding to know if the cast of Money Heist would reunite for a spin-off series. Nothing was confirmed until both Alex Pina and screenwriter Javier Gomez Santander hinted at something possible in the near future.

“We have many opportunities for spin-offs,” said Alex Pina, accounting it to the “strong identities of the characters”. The nature of complex characters in Money Heist makes it possible for every character to appear in a spin-off to display their hidden, undiscovered side.

Besides, it seems unnatural to see the show returning for another heist after this second heist comes to a close. It would not only be repetitive in the thematic approach but also probably lack the adrenaline rush induced by the previous seasons.

What is the status of production?

In July 2020, Pina teased the fans by releasing a picture of him setting in the show’s back garden office, wearing sunglasses, with his dog by his side. He captioned the photo with a “Writing La Casa de Papel 5”. In July of the same year, the production company, Vancouver Media, posted pictures hinting that production had already begun.

The dashing Pedro Alonso, who plays Berlin, hinted at his return by talking about how he had his hair cut and “tried on clothes”. He spoke of how the people at the meeting wore masks resembling the Pentagon. Talking about his character, he confirmed that “the fact is that soon I will be him again. It’s called Berlin and it’s pure love”. Berlin has, since his demise, appeared in flashbacks. It is expected that the fifth season shall have him reappear in recurrent flashbacks as well.

The enigmatic Alaro Morte, too, teased fans with a “The Professor is back”, which sent us all into a frenzy. Fas were even more intrigued when he posted a picture sometime later with blood-stained clothes which fuelled conspiracy theories about the Professor’s possible demise.

Ursula Cobero, aka Tokio, posted a cute selfie in a white crop top announcing her first day returning on set, asking fans to “wish me luck”. Itziar Ituno announced Lisbon’s return as well. A faithful Twitter account with its alias name as Sara has been posting various BTS photos, appeasing the thirst of fans who are eagerly waiting for the new season. These photos see Berlin looking dapper in a suit and hat among other production photos.

In February 2021, it has been reported that the cast has concluded their Madrid filming schedule for the fifth season.

How many episodes will there be?

Netflix Media Center confirmed that the final season shall have two more episodes than the previous season which had eight episodes.

The final season will come to a nail-biting finish with ten episodes and hopefully exceed audience expectations.

Who are the cast members in the fifth season?

Besides the original cast members, the other characters set to return are Olalla Hernandez (Amanda), Fernando Cayo (Colonel Tamayago), Belen Cuestas (Manila), Luka Peros (Marsella) and more; there shall be two new characters this season. Miguel Agel Silvestre announced excitedly with a “Maximo of joy” on Instagram that he had been roped in to play a character n the fifth season. He is considered to be the new villain. According to Pina, they are constantly in search of able, “charismatic, intelligent and brilliant opponents” whose intelligence can be parallelled with the Professor’s to pose a challenge to the latter.

Patrick Criado, who s known notably for his roles in The King and Plastic Sea is the second addition to the cast for the fifth season. Jose Manuel Seda, known for his short film Transito, has been roped in too. He confirmed the same via his Twitter where he claimed this to be a “wonderful [birthday] gift” and something that he could only “dream of being in”.

Will we see a Nairobi comeback in the fifth season?

Spoiler alert if you have not watched the previous seasons but Nairobi died from a headshot so it is impossible to see her full-fledged return on the show. However, the listing on IMDB features her name on the first episode of the series which indicates that she might make a comeback in form of flashbacks, memories or repeat sequences. We miss Nairobi dearly and to see her in replay sequences would perhaps be enough for us to be happy.

“After all, what’s more human than the fight for survival?”

Why is Money Heist coming to an end?

In 2020, it was confirmed via a simple Twitter post that the heist “comes to an end”.

There might be several reasons as to why the show makers have decided to no longer continue with the show. However, the primary reason lies with the actors being very busy with their respective solo careers which makes gathering the ensemble quite difficult.
