'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' reunion special gets confirmed air date

30 years ago, The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television series aired, kick-starting the beloved franchise that has overseen several series, games and toys. It has been confirmed that some of the original cast will reunite for an anniversary special airing on Netflix on Wednesday, April 19th.

David Yost, who played the original Blue Ranger, shared the logo and some photos of the special on Twitter. The special will feature Yost, original Black Ranger Walter E. Jones, Pink Ranger Catherine Sutherland, Steve Cardenas, Karan Ashley, and Johnny Yong Bosch, as reported by EW.

Barbara Goodson and Richard Horvitz will also return as villain Rita Repulsa and Zordon’s robot assistant Alpha 5.

However, two faces will not be returning for the special, as Yellow Ranger actor Thuy Thrang passed away in 2001 following a car accident at age 27. However, Charlie Kersh will uphold her legacy on the show in her role of Minh, the daughter of Thrang’s character. Furthermore, Jason David Frank, who played the Green Ranger, passed away at 48 last November.

Variety shared co-star Walter Jones’ reaction to the news: “Can’t believe it…. RIP Jason David Frank,” Jones posted on Instagram. “My heart is sad to have lost another member of our special family.”

EW shared: “Face to face with a familiar threat from the past. In the midst of a global crisis, they are called on once again to be the heroes the world needs. Inspired by the legendary mantra from the franchise ‘Once a Ranger, Always a Ranger,’ Once and Always reminds everyone when you become a Ranger, you are always a part of the Ranger family and always welcome.”

From 1993 to 1995, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers aired 145 episodes. The series was also adapted into a theatrical film in 1995, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie.

The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Once and Always special will premiere on Netflix worldwide on Wednesday, April 19th.
