Michelle Monaghan heads to the rink in a new hockey series for Netflix
Michelle Monaghan, best known for her stints in True Detective and The White Lotus, is set to star in a new eight-episode hockey series for Netflix.
Created by Nick Naveda, famous for Words on Bathroom Walls and My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward, the upcoming hockey series has Bridget Bedard attached as a showrunner and executive producer.
The still-untitled hockey series is set in the town of South Dorothy, Minnesota, where hockey is basically “everything.” But when a devastating loss leaves the high school hockey team to hit rock bottom, Monaghan, who portrays Harper Sullivan, an unlikely hockey coach, is brought in to reformulate and resurrect the team from the brink of defeat, breathing new life into South Dorothy.
Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps is the production company behind the upcoming series, which has so far produced hits like Stranger Things, All the Light We Cannot See, The Perfect Couple, and The Adam Project.
In a conversation with Tudum, Nevada said, “I’ve carried South Dorothy and its people in my heart for as long as I can remember. To finally bring that world to life with my Grizzly family at 21 Laps and Netflix is nothing short of a dream come true. Big love and gratitude to my partners for this opportunity and for all their unyielding support over the years.”
The series takes place in the small working-class town of South Dorothy, Minnesota, where the high school hockey team has been producing state championship and NHL legends for decades, thanks to Coach “Sully” Sullivan. But when a tragic bus accident ends fatally for several players and Sully himself, the townspeople set their eyes on Harper Sullivan, Coach Sully’s widow, to coach a new team of young talents and reclaim their way of life.
In addition to Monaghan starring as Coach Harper Sullivan, the show has Emilie Bierre playing Riley Sullivan, Shai Chase as Henry Sullivan, Josh Macqueen as Rhett Nelson, Costa D’Angelo as Owen Boone, Carter Shimp as Austin Ryder, Ethan Holder as Cooper Cunningham, Isaac Arellanes as Manny Rodriguez, Chloe Avakian as Izzy Miller, Caleb Baumann as Elu, River Codack as Tyler Walker, Angus Albinati as Jack McGrath, and Callum Orchison as Derek Marchbanks.
Levy, Dan Levine, and Robert Atwood are executive producers for 21 Laps, while Moera Ainai serves as a producer. Trey Edward Shults, who serves as an executive producer, will also direct the first two episodes. “Nick and Bridget have built a world and ensemble of characters that are rooted in authenticity and huge heart, which, not surprisingly, attracted such great talent [like] our director, Trey Edward Shults and lead Michelle Monaghan. With its visceral sports backdrop and a story grounded in deep humanity, we cannot wait to bring this show to a global audience,” says Levy.
But just like the show’s title, the release date currently remains under wraps. So, stay tuned for more updates!
