Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are producing ‘The Wedding Date’ adaptation for Netflix
Netflix has roped in Girls Trip writer Tracy Oliver for the adaptation of The Wedding Date from New York Times best-selling author Jasmine Guillory. What’s also exciting is that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are producing for Archewell, alongside Tracy Ryerson.
The news comes hot on the heels of the release of With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration, a holiday special episode of the Duchess’s well-received unscripted series, With Love, Meghan.
But returning to the main news, The Wedding Date, published in 2018, serves as the first novel in Guillory’s Wedding Date series.
According to an exclusive Deadline report, The Wedding Date tells the story of a career-driven political strategist, whose chance elevator encounter with a charming man leads to her posing as a stranger’s wedding date. But with the onset of a fake romance, she discovers, even when you stop believing in love, it has a strange way of coming around when you least expect it.
Oliver, who had her breakthrough with the 2017 comedy Girls Trip, became the first Black woman to write a film that earned over $100million at the box office. Her writing credits also include Little, The Sun Is Also a Star, and The Blackening. In addition to these, Oliver created and executive-produced First Wives Club and Harlem.
On the TV front, she has her hands full with multiple projects currently under development, including two book-based thrillers: Paper Gods for Netflix and Not a Happy Family at Starz. Movie-wise, she’s busy with the development of Girls Trip 2, The Blackening 2, and Deck the Y’alls.
Oliver is repped by Artists First, CAA, Myman Greenspan Fox, and Guillory is repped by Gersh, Ziffren Brittenham, and Root Literary.
Markle and Prince Harry have strengthened their business tie-ups with Netflix, with Archewell and the streamer extending their creative partnership with a multi-year, first-look deal earlier in 2025. They have been in business since 2020, and their association has led to several promising ventures, including Polo, With Love, Meghan, Heart of Invictus, Harry & Meghan, and Live to Lead.
Besides the latest holiday edition episode, With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebrations, Archewell was also behind a recently released Netflix documentary, Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within. Archewell’s upcoming productions include the romance Meet Me at the Lake, based on Carley Fortune’s bestseller.
Additionally, the Duchess has joined forces with the streamer for her lifestyle brand, As Ever. And in case you’re unaware, both Markle and Prince Harry are executive producers on the Sundance-bound documentary, Cookie Queens.
