Maya Hawke is not too keen on a 'Stranger Things' season five romance

Stranger Things and Asteroid City star Maya Hawke may have been a late addition to the superhit Netflix series but soon became an absolute fan-favourite.

Hawke’s Robin Buckley became a part of the main gang in no time. Her friendship with Steve Harrington is easily one of the best platonic relationships in pop culture right now.

However, Hawke has expressed her “mixed” feelings about her character’s romantic future. While fans highly cherish Robin’s friendship with Steve, some hope to see her in a relationship, particularly with her crush, Vickie, the marching band clarinettist introduced in season four.

Responding to a question from Yahoo Entertainment about whether she envisions Robin with a girlfriend in the show’s upcoming season, Hawke said that she feels conflicted.

She does not want a possible romance in Robin’s life to distract from her friendships on the show, “That friendship with Steve is so special,” before adding, “And friendships have been carrying me through my life. I think they’re really important and they deserve their airtime.”

Speaking about a possible romance for Robin, Hawke said, “It’s both a great thing, and I also love characters where their love life is not the centre of their existence.”

The show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers, have yet to finalise the storyline’s direction. Season five, expected to be in production, has been delayed due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike. Hawke confirms the indefinite hiatus and mentions the potential strike by the Screen Actors Guild as another factor contributing to the uncertainty surrounding the show’s future.

Noah Schnapp’s character Will also came out (to viewers, not his friends) in the fourth season. It remains to be seen how his queer journey evolves alongside Robin’s in the fifth and last season of Stranger Things.
