Manga adaptation, ‘Parasyte: The Grey’, coming to Netflix

Netflix has unveiled the release date for its highly anticipated Korean sci-fi thriller, Parasyte: The Grey. The animated series rejuvenates a classic manga creation from the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Slated to premiere globally on April 5th, the new series marks a fresh adaptation of Hitoshi Iwaaki’s acclaimed manga Parasyte. The legendary manga artist is known for his thought-provoking philosophical undertones, often depicted in scenes of gory horror and offbeat humour.

Originally serialised from 1989 to 1994, the classic manga has garnered widespread acclaim over the past three decades, spawning successful adaptations, including a TV anime and two live-action movies.

Parasyte: The Grey is set in modern-day Korea with a plot revolving around a group known as Team Grey, dedicated to defeating parasitic creatures threatening civilisation.

The upcoming series is helmed by director Yeon Sang-ho and adds to Netflix’s fascinating and diverse Korean catalogue. Renowned for his previous work on successful projects like Hellbound and Train to Busan, Sang-ho’s knack for intense and immersive storytelling puts the project in good stead for triumph.

“In my twenties, Parasyte was a staple for those of us who were passionate about manga and animation,” Sang-ho says, discussing the exciting new project. “Having the opportunity to build upon it and create something new is not only a great honour but also a dream come true from my younger years.”

While we await the official trailer, you can see a line-up of exciting Korean serials and movies set to arrive on Netflix throughout 2024 below.
