‘Man on Fire’ ending explained: What happens to John and Poe?
When the Special Forces Mercenary John Creasy is initially introduced in Man on Fire on Netflix, he’s on a league above. But the glory doesn’t last long as a mission in Mexico City goes south, killing his entire squad and leaving Creasy struggling with extreme PTSD. Determined to run from his past, he eventually finds a job loading boxes at a warehouse.
Since the Mexico City mishap, Creasy has inevitably recoiled from the social world. “He lost some comrades in the field that he was supposed to be responsible for, and what that has left him with is a fear of opening up, a fear of getting close to someone, and a fear of experiencing that hurt again,” actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II explains to Tudum.
Consequently, when his old pal Paul Rayburn tries to lure him back to action with a security job under Brazil’s President Carmo, Creasy isn’t easily sold. Although John is trying to escape his past, Rayburn’s daughter, Poe, is doing just the opposite when we meet her first. Having been on the move all over the world with her ex-military father, she now seeks to return to her old home, often clashing with her parents in the process.
Their relationship ends tragically when a bomb strikes Rayburn’s building, killing everyone except Poe and Creasy. While Creasy was busy in a drunken street fight, Poe was on her way back from a party following an argument with her father. The tragedy ultimately leaves Creasy as the only stable force in Poe’s life. But does the stability last? What ultimately happens to John and Poe?
What happens to John and Poe in Man on Fire?
After Poe’s run-in with a suspicious motorcyclist in Man on Fire before her family was murdered, she tells Creasy the same. Subsequently, he alerts Carmo’s right-hand man, Soares, hoping to get Poe safely out of the country on a private jet. But when they become targets of an ambush, John is forced to spring back into action. Although he crash-lands the jet, after the touchdown, both go into hiding with the help of local driver Valeria Melo.
While John has his next steps planned, what he doesn’t know is that an old CIA ally, Tappen, has turned into a traitor, and he desperately wants Creasy dead. However, armed with a hostage from the rival camp, Creasy intends to gather as much information as he can. Although the hostage points him towards Gabriel Estevas, the plan falls apart when Poe is abducted alongside Livro, leaving John with no choice but to trade the key, AKA Estevas, to get them back.
The exchange is successful, and Brazilian authorities even bust the terrorist cell. In the aftermath, Estevas kills himself, but for Tappen? The mission is far from over. As John plans to infiltrate the prison to interrogate Emanuel Ferraz, the name he got from Estevas before the shootout, Tappen grows all the more determined to eliminate Creasy. But there, John gets plenty of answers, including the names of the masterminds behind the bombing: President Carmo and Soares.
Initially, John plans to take Tappen out along with himself. However, after Melo’s explanation, Creasy lays a meticulous trap, leading Tappen and Soares to a safe deposit box containing a toxic gas that they assumed to have evidence of a tape of the president ordering the bombing. And when they reach the hospital, John ensures to take them out both.
The series concludes with Carmo’s arrest and Creasy’s exoneration. The end also clarifies that Poe has been living with her grandmother all this time. But just when John seems to be headed out for lunch with Poe, a call from Director Moncrief comes, and an opportunity rings in. And it looks like Creasy is now officially firing up.
