Everything we know about Lupin season 3: Release date, cast, plot and more

Created by George Kay and Francois Uzan, Lupin is a French thriller whose premiere was streamed on Netflix in January 2021, based on the exploits of the “gentleman thief” Arsene Lupin, who inspired 39 novellas and 17 novels penned by author auric Leblanc, on which the widely acclaimed show is based. Stuffed full of wit, humour, action and mystery, the show abounds in jewels, necklaces, diamonds, troubled past stories, engrossing characters and riveting heist sequences.

The show is, essentially, based on the exploits of the professional thief Assane Diop whose father had fled from Senegal to France to provide his son with a better future yet gets framed wrongfully for stealing a diamond necklace by his corrupt and affluent employer Hubert Pellegrini, prompting the former to hang himself out of embarrassment, leaving the young Assane orphaned. Assane vows revenge and inspired by the books about Arsene Lupin, Assane decides to seek vengeance by resorting to his wit, charm and sharp presence of mind to help him get to his desired lace and expose Pellegrini’s true self.

The first two seasons of the show was met with an extremely positive response, with fans raving about how the show kept them on the edge of their seats with its intense, nerve-wracking narratives.  The sheer anticipation of watching Diop using various methods to achieve the impossible is unimaginable. With the second instalment, the show ties up the loose ends and Assane Diop seemingly gets justice when Pellegrini is handcuffed and whisked away. However, Diop could always face a new nemesis and with the show ending on an ambiguous note where he tells his family that it would be a while until they saw him again, the curiosity of thriller aficionados have been roused who simply can no longer wait for another engaging season.

Here, we have compiled a comprehensive guide comprising details pertaining to the third instalment of the series to quench the inquisitiveness of fans who cannot wait to see Diop strike yet again.

When will Lupin part 3 be available for streaming?

The gap between the first two seasons of the show was relatively short with the first part releasing in January followed closely by the second part in June.

However, fans might have to wait a tad bit longer for the third instalment of the series. According to the co-creator of the show, George Kay, the show is being “actively” story-lined “with real confidence that that’s [part 3] gonna happen because the reaction to the first five episodes would suggest that we’ve got every chance that would be coming next year… unless something goes completely wrong!”

Thus, Lupin part 3 might not stream until 2022. However, no trailer has been released for the third part of the series yet.

Update: Lupin part 3 releases on Netflix on October 5th, 2023.

What will the third season be about?

While Kay has confirmed the third instalment to be taking a different course from the initial ten episodes, one cannot be sure of the possible storyline due to the absence of an official trailer. Kay said that they had used the second part to end with the Queen necklace heist along with “the avenging of Babakar’s death and the revenge mission against Pellegrini”. Kay further elaborated on their plans by stating hoe they were “just looking at a story for Part 3 that reuses a book we’ve already seen used once, but from a different angle with a different detail”.

Although they shall be “moving on” from the initial 10-episode arc, there shall most likely be continuous references to Diop’s convoluted past self. In an interview with Variety, Kay revealed how he does not plan to shift the show from Paris and will continue reflecting on Diop’s complicated past to play on the character’s emotional and psychological being. He has promised to “create a new adventure that will run forward from there and further unsettle Assane”, stating how it will be “the story of this family man who just happens to be a kind of superhero in his spare time”, in addition to the new and exciting characters, dangerous thrills and entanglements.

Who will be a part of this season?

Without Omar Sy’s stellar performance as Diop, the show would probably not make any sense, so it is a given that the charming and suave French actor is returning to reprise his role. It is most likely that Ludivine Sagnier and Etan Simon shall return as Diop’s ex-girlfriend, Claire, and son, Raoul respectively as well since the second season ended with Diop informing his family of his absence for quite some time on the bridge Antoine Gouy, the mastermind behind the heists along with Diop, shall be making a likely return as his trusted associate Benjamin, as will the eagle-eyed detective Youssef Guedira played by Soufiane Guerrab. While fans are still pondering over whether Hubert Pellegrini, played by Herve Pierre, who was handcuffed and taken away, will make a return along with his daughter Juliette, played by Clotilde Hesme and Nicole Garcia’s Anne, his wife.

George Kay has confirmed in an interview with Bustle that “Part 3 will be a new adventure entirely with a new emotional goal and similar amount of adventures and self-contained stories to kind of get us across that arc”. Kay further added that Part 3 shall be “similar, but moving on from the kind of central arc of 1 and 2.” Besides the old characters, fans are definitely hyped to see the new and interesting characters that Kay shall be adding to the mix.

While waiting patiently for the third season, be sure to re-watch the two seasons to get a hang of it once again and feel the pure surge of adrenaline as Diop gets on with his job. Here are the two trailers of the two installments that won hearts of fans all over the world.
