Louis Theroux announces the release date for his ‘Manosphere’ documentary on Netflix
It’s been almost a year since Adolescence made headlines after hitting Netflix screens worldwide. And now, Louis Theroux’s deep dive into the investigation of the manosphere is finally coming to Netflix.
According to an exclusive Deadline report, Theroux’s Mindhouse Productions has created a 90-minute feature documentary led by the prolific UK documentarian. Nancy Strang and Arron Fellows also unveiled a Channel 4 documentary with financial trader-turned-campaigner Gary Stevenson alongside a podcast division to “cut through the undergrowth of the [TV] commissioning process.”
Coming to Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere, scheduled to drop on Netflix on March 11th, the documentary will have Theroux heading towards some of the darkest places to explore and examine a world occupied by people like Andrew Tate.
Harrison Sullivan, Myron Gaines, Nicolas Kenn De Balinthazy, Justin Waller, and Ed Matthews – who have shouldered the responsibility of reshaping the minds of young men’s perspective on masculinity, calling for a resurgent global men’s rights movement – appear in the documentary.
Reports regarding Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere surfaced last year due to unwarranted leaks, sparking assumptions that it would be somewhat of an Adolescence spin-off. However, Theroux clarified to the tabloid that his team already begun production before the Emmy-winning series was released on Netflix.
“It’s sort of nothing like Adolescence, but it’s in the precinct of what the boy in Adolescence might have been watching,” Theroux said. “I guess Adolescence was a proof of concept, but I don’t ever think we needed a proof of concept. We knew it was a hot subject.”
Theroux also opened up about the awkwardness of filming Inside the Manosphere and subsequently finding himself routinely appearing on the social radar of his subjects.
“I knew they would be streaming or filming me and would put that content out. And I hoped we’d get this feedback loop where there was a meta-narrative that was then affecting my approach to the story. Sometimes it was kind of embarrassing. I’d arrive back from filming, and my kids would say, ‘Dad, what were you doing? You got owned.’ That’s a bit painful but actually makes for a stronger film,” he explained.
Inside the Manosphere marks the first Mindhouse Netflix feature since the cyberstalker documentary Can I Tell You a Secret? While, of course, there are many more documentaries dropping on Netflix next month, skipping this one would count as a sin. So, mark your calendars now!
