'Lockwood & Co' creator discusses possibility of second series

The director of the brand new Netflix fantasy series Lockwood and Co has given fans a nugget of hope for a second series, shedding light on what could possibly happen if the story were to continue.

Season one of the new show, which follows a small startup business run by two boys and a psychically gifted girl, is based on the first two books in Jonathan Stroud’s books series: The Screaming Staircase and The Whispering Skull. Cornish is the mind behind the magic, with the British filmmaker having previously helmed such favourites as 2011’s Attack the Block and 2019’s The Kid Who Would Be King.

Unsure of the fate of the series, Cornish sat down with Collider to discuss the ins and outs of the new Netflix show, expressing: “Well listen, there are five Lockwood & Co books written by the very brilliant Jonathan Stroud. We’ve adapted the first two for the first season, and the books get better and better. The character relationships get more complex, the world-building expands, [there are] twists and turns, and it gets epic, and amazing set pieces”.

Continuing, he adds, “So, we would love to get the chance to put all that stuff on screen, but at the same time, we are very proud of the first season. If you want to find out what’s beyond that door and you can’t wait for more, then it’s in the books”.

Netflix remains tight-lipped about a second series with Cornish, too, with the director further stating, “You don’t find out. I think we did very well for the first couple of weeks. I think we have another meeting coming up, which I will not attend because I’m an artistic type. I like to keep my attention towards the creative side of it, you know? And we’ll see. It’s a mystery to me”.
