‘KPop Demon Hunters’: The Netflix movie smashing Rotten Tomatoes records
Just when fans think Netflix is taking a break from hustle, it pulls the rug from under them, every single time. With Netflix, predictions can go only so far because its house of cards always has a trump. Despite the controversies surrounding Netflix’s stance in the streaming vs theatrical debate, the giant recently left sceptics silenced with an original film that has officially set a Rotten Tomatoes record. And yes, it’s none other than its latest musical fantasy film, KPop Demon Hunters.
KPop Demon Hunters was destined for greatness. And the chart-topping Netflix film just showed why with a one-of-a-kind Rotten Tomatoes record. KPop Demon Hunters now has the highest combined critic and audience score for a Netflix original production: 188. Critics have rated the animated musical film a staggering 95% and the audience approval rating is a whopping 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans have co-directed the animated Netflix film. It follows a group of K-pop girls, Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who make up the HUNTR/X and are also undercover demon hunters. The film takes place in a world where the demons have preyed on humans for generations. Following a world tour, one of the bandmates starts to lose her voice because she’s part demon. And the only solution to this is the complete obsoletion of demons from the world.
HUNTR/X goes head-to-head against a rival boy band, the Saja Boys, to make their mark in the industry. However, the biggest curveball KPop Demon Hunters throw is that the Saja Boys are made of demons, but in incognito mode, making the film an intense journey of symphonic action. The film is currently ranked number two on Netflix’s top ten global English movies list, and it’s a top ten movie across 80 countries.
KPop Demon Hunters leapt from the sixth position on Netflix’s global top ten movies list within a day. Despite its relatively recent release on June 20th, it has amassed 9.2million views from 15.4million hours watched. At the moment, KPop Demon Hunters is just behind Tyler Perry’s record-breaking psychological thriller film, Straw. But on the Rotten Tomatoes list of chart-topping Netflix original productions, KPop Demon Hunters is leading the pack.
Succeeding KPop Demon Hunters is The Mitchells vs the Machines with 97% critic’s rating and 89% audience rating, followed by Hit Man with 95% critics and 85% audience rating. His Three Daughters and The Irishman round out the top five list with 98% critic and 83% audience score, and 95% critic and 86% audience approval. Although the column consists of highly acclaimed Netflix originals, KPop Demon Hunters’ performance is worth noting.
Kang’s foresight of blending K-pop, demonology, and animation has really paid off. And considering it’s just a step away from the top spot on Netflix charts, it would be a delight to watch KPop Demon Hunters maintain its streaming reputation. Having already sneaked in with a Rotten Tomatoes victory, all that remains is for the film to wear Netflix’s crown.
