‘KPop Demon Hunters’, Netflix’s record-breaking summer flick, eyes a sequel
KPop Demon Hunters is not only breaking records. It’s billing expansive receipts to ensure the magic continues above and beyond, with Netflix reportedly setting sights on a sequel for the Maggie Kang chart-topper.
According to Puck News, Sony and Netflix are in preliminary talks to produce a KPop Demon Hunters sequel. The news comes after the film became the most-watched Netflix title of all time earlier on Tuesday, surpassing Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds’ blockbuster flick, Red Notice, with over 236million views earned to date.
The soundtrack also made Billboard history with four simultaneous tracks in the top ten segment of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Netflix already excused its largely debated anti-theatrical prejudice by screening a sing-along version of the animated film in over 1,700 North American theatres. And as expected, the response was colossal, with over 1,300 sold-out screenings held over the weekend in theatres of the US, the UK, Canada, and New Zealand, among others.
Despite just a weekend-long screening, KPop Demon Hunters managed to peak the domestic box office, outshining summer blockbusters like Weapons and Freakier Friday. Now, with a sequel reportedly in consideration, Netflix intends to expand the demonology universe, making way for more such milestone achievements.
The streaming giant already has plans to establish real-time shopping sites in Philadelphia and Dallas before the holiday fervour kicks in. While the plans have been in the works for years, Netflix is capitalising on the KPop Demon Hunters‘ popularity to launch exclusive experiences on the shopping site.
In a July interview with Variety, co-director Kang previously expressed hopes to churn out a sequel for this Netflix phenomenon. She shared about her plans to focus on Zoey and Mira’s histories in terms of storytelling. “We’ve set up so much for potential backstory. Obviously, there’s a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored, and we had to do that because there’s only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes,” she explained.
While KPop Demon Hunters was majorly focused on HUNTR/X’s lead vocalist, Rumi’s story, the chances are that the sequel could enlighten viewers more on her fellow band members, since the original film had no room for their backstories.
