‘KPop Demon Hunters’ is returning to theatres for a Halloween sing-along screening

In the wake of the pumpkin festivities, Netflix is officially bringing back KPop Demon Hunters to theatres near you.

The animated fantasy film about a K-pop group of demon slayers is returning to the big screen this Halloween with a special sing-along screening. According to Netflix, KPop Demon Hunters will be played from October 31st to November 2nd at all the major US theatrical chains, including AMC, Regal, and Cinemark, in select theatres.

This comes as a surprise, as the country’s top theatrical circuits are usually against screening films from the theatrical-averse Netflix. This would mark the second time the streaming giant fanned the flames for a theatrical release for KPop Demon Hunters.

In turn, this could be beneficial to the exhibitors, considering they’ve had a slow box office in October. Besides KPop Demon Hunters, coming to the theatres this Halloween is Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone-led thriller Bugonia and a Twilight re-release.

During its brief theatrical screening in August, KPop Demon Hunters witnessed a major box office victory, grossing approximately $18million when the sing-along version was released for two days. It was already a shocking move on Netflix’s part to bring the film to the theatres, and there are two reasons behind it.

Firstly, Netflix has always been against the idea of going theatrical with its releases. Secondly, KPop Demon Hunters already debuted on the streaming platform two months ago. Then again, Maggie Kang’s animated flick has made history on Netflix, not only becoming the most-watched film of all time, but also as the longest-running top ten title ever. In fact, its tracks, ‘Golden,’ ‘Your Idol,’ and ‘Soda Pop’ have shown a strong visibility on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

With the upcoming theatrical event, fans can opt for a big-screen re-watch, which also puts Netflix in an advantageous position, especially with the conversations surrounding a potential sequel. When the first time KPop Demon Hunters went to theatres, AMC was the only chain that didn’t screen the film. But now, it will be welcomed at more than 400 AMC locations all over the US and Europe.

And with AMC showing a change of heart towards Netflix, this may not be the only collaboration. Before this, AMC had screened Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery in 2022. But since then, it has avoided playing Netflix releases due to their differences of opinion on the length of the theatrical window movies should be provided with.

A spokesperson for AMC Theatres said in a statement, “While the two companies have not had a commercial relationship in recent years, both Netflix and AMC are intrigued by the mutually beneficial opportunities that could arise from this and future collaboration. Discussions are underway as to what that may entail, but no further details are being shared at this time.”
