Kevin Hart is coming to Netflix with a comedy competition series ‘Funny AF’

We have all seen stand-up specials before, both good and bad. They have a perfectly finished set with the crowd laughing in the background, which sometimes seems a bit unnatural, but hey, as far as we’re getting a good laugh, everything works. However, what you don’t usually see is everything that happens before that moment. The testing, the rewrites, and all the efforts that go behind making sure everything lands perfectly. Well, good news for you because Kevin Hart is bringing that in Funny AF on Netflix.

Kevin Hart is bringing that process onto Netflix with a competition series built around working comedians. But these are not beginners trying things out for the first time. These comedians will come from New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, so these are people who have already been performing and shaping material in live rooms. Usama Siddiquee is part of the group and has already been mentioned among comics to watch in 2026. Uncle Lazer also appears, carrying recognition from Kill Tony, which has its own following in stand-up circles.

Once the competition begins, each round will keep circling back to performance and revision. Contestants will go on stage with material, take the response they get, and then return after making changes. You can follow how a set shifts across rounds, which means you can see what stays, what gets cut, and what finally starts working. That progression becomes part of the viewing experience because each performance connects directly to the previous one.

The judging panel doesn’t stay the same, which adds another moving piece. Different episodes bring in comedians such as Keegan-Michael Key, Tom Segura, Kumail Nanjiani, Chelsea Handler, and Nikki Glaser. Each round builds on what they did before, so you notice the difference.

The rollout begins on April 20, with episodes releasing across three weeks. Then it will build into live semi-final and finale episodes on May 4 and May 5. Those final stages include real-time audience voting, which means the outcome is decided during the broadcast itself.

Kevin Hart is also serving as an executive producer for Funny AF. The teams involved have worked on large unscripted formats, which shows in how the competition is structured.

The winner receives a Netflix stand-up special, which has always been a major platform for comedians looking to expand their audience. Every round in the series connects back to that outcome, with each performance and revision contributing to the final result.

By the end of the competition, it’s not going to be only about who had one great set but also about who kept working on their jokes. The goal will be to make them better each time and deliver them when the pressure will be highest.
