Kate Hudson joins Mindy Kaling’s new comedy series

Netflix has made the announcement that the Academy Award-nominated actor Kate Hudson will be joining the upcoming as-yet-untitled Mindy Kaling comedy series in the lead role.

Kaling has previously worked on Never Have I Ever for Netflix, as well as performing in The Office and The Mindy Project, and her new show will be entering production soon.

It has been inspired by the real-life family lives of those who own big sports franchises like the LA Lakers, with Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen joining Kaling as writers and Stassen serving as showrunner.

Hudson, Howard Klein, Jeanie Buss and Linda Rambi will all act as executive producers, while Jordan Rambis will produce.

Hudson will play Isla Gordon, a former socialite who takes on the charitable contribution role in the basketball team her family owns. Previously overlooked and undervalued, Isla gets her time in the spotlight after her brother is hospitalised.

The logline for the series reads, “When a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla Gordon is appointed President of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business.

It continues, “Ambitious and often overlooked, Isla will have to prove to her skeptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job, especially in the unpredictable, male-dominated world of sports.”
