‘Jurassic World’: the sci-fi action thriller climbing the Netflix charts
What goes around comes back around, but if you don’t believe, you might want to take a look at Jurassic World rising through the ranks on Netflix charts, over a decade after its release.
In the week of January 5th to January 11th, the sci-fi action thriller made its way onto the most popular movies chart, ranking eighth with 3.5million views, succeeding Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery and The Paw Patrol: The Movie, each of which has amassed 3.7million and 3.6million views.
While that was a close call, Jurassic World is also the top ten movie in 23 countries this week. By the looks of it, the dominance lives on 11 years later, because just in case you’re unfamiliar, the 2015 sci-fi film ended up breaking several box office records during its time.
The movie reportedly grossed a staggering 1.671million worldwide. At the time of its release, Jurassic World was the second-highest-grossing film of 2015 and the third-highest-grossing film of all time. It aimed for the stars in its opening weekend, becoming the first movie to collect over $500million in a single weekend, quashing the previous worldwide record held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.
Now, it’s back on streaming, and viewers clearly cannot get enough of it. As Jurassic World experiences a new life on Netflix, in addition to the film’s extensive popularity, cultural legacy, and existing fandom, several other factors come into play.
Following the release of Jurassic World Rebirth last year and its relatively recent arrival on streaming services, Jurassic World may have become a natural starting point for viewers. Not to forget that Jurassic World: Chaos Theory also drew its conclusion on Netflix in 2025, which could explain why the audience might be flocking back to the film.
But if you’re new to Jurassic World, well, for starters, it takes place 22 years after the events of Jurassic Park, but on the same fictional island of Isla Nublar, located off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. After nearly two decades, when Jurassic World reopens, in order to amplify profits, geneticists create the highly intelligent Indominus rex through transgenesis.
Jurassic World follows two brothers visiting the dinosaur theme park to see their aunt, Claire Dearing, but they end up getting lost and separated from her. As former Navy man Owen Grady trains raptors, he finds himself clashing with Chief Security, Hoskins, over weaponising them, inadvertently setting off the unsociable Indominus rex free from its enclosure, sparking an equally chaotic and dangerous situation for visitors and the young boys.
So, in case you were wondering what’s behind the rise of Jurassic World and whether you should take a chance as newcomers, we hope this leaves you seated for the real movie on Netflix.
