Jennifer Lopez and her production company have signed a partnership deal with Netflix that will allow them first refusal on anything her company creates.
In an official statement, Netflix announced: “Jennifer Lopez and Netflix have formed a creative partnership! JLo’s production company, Nuyorican Productions, will produce a slate of films and series (both scripted and unscripted) with an emphasis on projects that support diverse female actors, writers, and filmmakers.”
The deal is set to include two films already in production starring Jennifer Lopez who was recently heralded for her acting in 2019’s Hustlers.
The Mother is set to see Lopez team up with Mulan director Niki Caro, for a film that follows a deadly female assassin forced out of hiding to fight for her daughter’s life.
While the second film, The Cipher, is based on a novel by the same by author Isabel Ojeda Maldonado. It is the story of an FBI agent forced to confront her past to catch a serial killer, from whom she escaped when she was 16 years old.
Nuyorican Productions is run by Lopez and her partner Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas with contributions from Benny Medina. They previously worked on projects including Second Act and Hustlers.
“I am excited to announce my new partnership with Netflix,” Lopez announced in a statement. “Elaine, Benny and I believe there is no better home for us than a forward leaning content creation company that seeks to defy conventional wisdom and directly market to the millions across the globe who no longer view art and entertainment with the kind of boundaries and limitations of the past.”
Scott Stuber, Netflix Head of Global Films, said: “Throughout every aspect of her career, Jennifer Lopez has been a force in entertainment. In partnering with her and Nuyorican we know she will continue to bring impactful stories, joy and inspiration to audiences around the world.”
Bela Bajaria, Netflix Head of Global TV, said: “Jennifer is a singular talent whose creativity and vision have captivated audiences and inspired the next generation around the world. For years she and the team at Nuyorican have brought a distinctive voice to entertainment, and I’m looking forward to working with her and the team to create new series for our members to love.”
