Jennifer Aniston reveals that she texted Matthew Perry the morning he died: "He was happy"

Following the death of Friends star Matthew Perry, his co-star Jennifer Aniston has revealed that she was texting him on the day he died.

Perry, known for playing the beloved character Chandler Bing, was found dead in his hot tub on October 28th 2023, with the cause of his death remaining “inconclusive.”

After his death was announced, his co-stars paid tribute to Perry online. Aniston wrote on Instagram, “Oh boy, this one has cut deep… Having to say goodbye to our Matty has been an insane wave of emotions that I’ve never experienced before.”

Perry struggled with drug and alcohol abuse for many years, including during his time on Friends, writing in his memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, that his dependence on substances only got worse under the “white-hot flame of fame.”

Aniston has since spoken to Variety about the text conversation she had with Perry the same morning he passed away. She explained, “He was happy. He was healthy. He had quit smoking. He was getting in shape. He was happy — that’s all I know.”

Aniston revealed that she “was literally texting with him that morning,” referring to him as “funny Matty.” She continued, “He was not in pain. He wasn’t struggling. He was happy.”

“I want people to know he was really healthy, and getting healthy. He was on a pursuit. He worked so hard. He really was dealt a tough one. I miss him dearly. We all do. Boy, he made us laugh really hard,” Aniston added.
