When Virgin River returned with its seventh season last week, viewers were more than elated. Then the beloved Netflix series pulled the curtain with a cliffhanger no one saw coming, and viewers simply couldn’t help but scratch their heads over whether the renewal news was still far down the line.

But you can put those worries to rest because Netflix has officially renewed Virgin River for an eighth season earlier in 2025.

“On behalf of myself and the whole Virgin River family, we’re eternally grateful to Netflix and to the fans for allowing us to continue on this journey with these beloved characters,” showrunner Patrick Sean Smith told Tudum during the series renewal, announced when the seventh season wrapped production in Vancouver and Mexico.

Now that the seventh season is done and dusted, it’s understandable if the Virgin River fans are curious about what awaits the eighth instalment.

The seventh season concluded with Mel finally saying something she had been waiting to say out loud for years, “I’m his mother.” The exchange takes place between her and the paramedics as she enters the ambulance, taking the newborn to the NICU. In a conversation with Tudum, actor Alexandra Breckenridge revealed how excited she has been to see Mel as a mother.

“I think we’ve anticipated that moment for far too long. It should be sweet. I’m sure it’ll be harder than she thinks it’s going to be,” Breckenridge said.

For those unaware, the child Mel and Jack adopted was born with a heart issue, and now he’s under the care of one of the world’s most revered pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons, Mel’s former co-worker and ex-boyfriend, Eli. According to Smith, the eighth season of Virgin River will be about “the challenges that raising a child with special needs puts on their marriage and how challenging it is to be new parents, much less new parents in a high-stakes situation.”

Meanwhile, Mel added, “I’m hoping that at some point they (Mel and Jack) get to some kind of normalcy. I’d love for Mel to be doing some gardening and cooking.”

Although it remains to be seen whether Mel has the room to make time for some light-hearted hobbies, now, fans at least know what the crux of Virgin River season eight could be. While the release date is unfortunately under wraps, since the seventh season just released, fans might have to wait a little longer for further updates. However, like its recent instalment, the upcoming one comprises ten episodes as well.
