Is Tyler reuniting with Wednesday in season two? A recap of their arc
Wednesday season two on Netflix is just three Wednesdays away at this point. With the Addams family becoming regulars at the Nevermore Academy and the recurring questions about the stalker from the first season, it’s only natural that they are curious about Wednesday’s love-interest-turned-Hyde, Tyler’s arc in what’s to come. But before dialling up the futuristic theories, let’s take a trip down the woeful lanes of what went down in Wednesday season one.
The first season of Wednesday confirmed that Tyler had been the Hyde wreaking havoc in Nevermore Academy. His monster lineage comes from his late mother, who was also a Hyde. It all began with Wednesday chancing upon a picture of Tyler’s mother, Francoise, in a Nevermore photograph with her mother, Morticia Gomez, in episode eight.
Back in the day, everyone was oblivious to Francoise’s true nature as monsters are kept at bay from the Nevermore Academy, thanks to their erratic temperament. It wasn’t until Tyler was born that his mother’s monstrous identity was unleashed. According to Wednesday, “Francoise’s post-partum depression triggered her Hyde abilities.”
Although his father, Sheriff Galpin, was cautious about Tyler carrying those Hyde genes, to the point of spending years watching out for him carefully, it was all for nought. “I think at the beginning Tyler was terrified [of being a Hyde],” Hunter Doohan told Tudum back in the day. But gradually he gives in to the gruesome groove of his bloodthirsty alter ego. Alfred Gough and Miles Millar were also convinced that Wednesday is attracted to Tyler’s dark side, calling it “very on-brand for her.”
Then again, Tyler was not really working alone. Pulling the strings from behind was Laurel Gates, a descendant of Joseph Crackstone. Fixated on eliminating the outcasts from Jericho, the Gates family has been on a mission to achieve that goal for generations. When Wednesday’s parents were at Nevermore, Laurel’s older brother, Garrett, tried to mass-poison the students.
But instead, an accident killed him. Laurel faked her death years before exacting revenge for Garrett’s death and entered Nevermore as the first normal teacher. Ultimately, using her Gates family knowledge, she unlocked Tyler’s Hyde instincts with a plant-based chemical, becoming his master. Laurel was the first person to allow Tyler some semblance of truth about his mother. However, the Hyde murder scheme was supposed to kill two birds with one stone.
Firstly, it was a natural cleansing for a few outcasts. Second, it allowed Laurel to gather enough remains to resurrect Crackstone to eradicate the outcasts once and for all. But with Wednesday foiling her schemes, Tyler seemingly ends up in a psych ward. While that might have felt like the end of that storyline, a snippet from the upcoming season shows Wednesday visiting Tyler.
A clip from Wednesday season two was released as part of the Next on Netflix event. It shows Wednesday in the asylum, visiting Tyler, where he’s held captive. Although it’s too early to say what this reunion counts for in the upcoming instalment, well, with Wednesday, expect nothing less than chaos.
