Is the Indian ‘Elite’ spin-off, ‘Class,’ returning for a second season?

Over three and a half years ago, Netflix India announced the Hindi adaptation of the hit Spanish series, Elite, titled Class. While the Spanish original ran for eight seasons, concluding in 2018 with 64 episodes, the Hindi adaptation has yet to drop a follow-up to its debut instalment.

Co-directed by Ashim Ahluwalia, Gul Dharmani, and Kabir Mehta, Class was originally released on Netflix on February 3rd, 2023. Although the series wasn’t an instant hit, having been featured on the global top 10 non-English series chart only for a week, it experienced massive regional success.

The Hindi-language crime drama thriller spent seven weeks in the top 10 rankings of India and five weeks in Pakistan and Bangladesh. The viewership was promising enough for Netflix to renew Class for a second season, which was announced on March 6th, 2023, a month after its debut as part of Netflix India’s slate of series renewals.

Next, in September 2024, The Times of India shared that the filming for the second season of Class was confirmed to begin “in the next couple of months,” with yet another insider close to the tabloid revealing the instalment was in the final stages of writing and that it “should go on the floors before the end of the year.” However, there were no updates after that.

During a Reddit AMA a year later by actor Anjali Sivaraman while promoting a separate project, she was asked who her favourite Class co-actors were. “I am the closest to Zeyn, Madhyama, and Chintan!” she said, but didn’t respond to the questions surrounding the return of the series.

Although Netflix didn’t comment on any development thereafter, in October 2025, Ayesha Kang shared with Financial Express that the second season of Class had been cancelled, despite the renewal and subsequent reports. “It’s only bad news,” she said, continuing, “It’s not happening.”

Cut to February 6th, another confirmation of the alleged cancellation arrived from actor Gurfateh Pirzada, which adds to Kanga’s statement. In a caption shared on his Instagram post, he wrote, “unfortunately we could not give you another season because life usually has other plans… I still remember it was the last week of 2024 when I heard the news of class being cancelled and I came down with a high fever and thought not again… not another one of my projects getting shelved…”

From the timeline mentioned by Pirzada and the Times of India report, it’s likely that while the second season was ready to go into production, it was halted before the cameras could begin rolling.

While this is not the first time such a scenario has unfolded, think Kaala Paani, Netflix has yet to comment on the current status. However, it doesn’t help the apprehension that the streamer has removed the “It’s Official: Another Season is Coming” tag from Class’s catalogue.
