Is ‘The Boroughs’ returning for a second season?

The Boroughs on Netflix was described as Stranger Things for adults. But once you tune into it, you’ll realise the series is way more than that, which, in turn, is bound to make you ask: why do every gripping Netflix mystery unfold at retirement communities? Well, we don’t know, but we’re not here to complain.

The eight-episode mystery series stars Alfred Molina as Sam Cooper, a reluctant widow mourning the loss of his wife, who moves into a breathtaking retirement home where nothing is as it seems.

Although he’s initially desperate to pull himself out of the contract, especially after Edward assaults him, Sam eventually decides to stay, thanks to Jack, and the monstrous run-in that forces him to team up with the rest of the gang. While the supernatural conspiracy at the centre of The Boroughs is done and dusted, is there a reason for the crew to return for more?

Well, Netflix hasn’t officially renewed The Boroughs for a second season yet. But then again, it’s only been a day since the release.

Considering how The Boroughs pulled the curtain on the season finale, opting for an ambiguous rather than a definitive ending, it’s likely that the streaming giant could summon the unlikely heroes for a second round of saving. However, when it comes to Netflix’s renewals, the streamer prefers to analyse factors, such as viewership figures and completion rates, to give the green light.

While the first season tells a self-contained story, The Boroughs was never really conceived as a limited series. Plus, the show actually culminates in an explosive finale with a cliffhanger ending that feels like the Netflix show sets the stage for new mysteries.

If you recall the final moments of the season, Sam’s mirror starts glitching once again, heavily implying that there’s still more supernatural mystery lingering in The Boroughs than the residents originally realised following the death of “Mother.” In fact, it feels like Sam hasn’t completely detached from the Mother’s world.

In a conversation with TV Insider, Molina said, “It’s important for the story because I think we already had an eye towards what’s going to happen, maybe season two – if it happens. ‘Where’s it going to go?’” Although the questions are many and the chances aplenty, it looks like there’s still some time before the audience truly gets their answers.

So, until then? Make the most of the debut season of The Boroughs, currently streaming on Netflix.
