Is ‘The Bad Guardian’ based on a true story?
If you’re someone who likes to keep up with cinematic trends, then the sudden rise of The Bad Guardian on Netflix’s weekly global top 10 chart must have caught your eye.
In the week dated March 16th to March 22nd, The Bad Guardian debuted with 2.9million views on Netflix’s most popular movies chart. While it’s currently ranked tenth on its international charts, in the US, it is one of the first five trending titles.
The psychological thriller, directed by Claudia Myers, follows Leigh’s harrowing battle to free her father, Jason, from a corrupt, exploitative court-appointed guardian who, through her manipulative tactics, seizes control of his finances and property, slowly pushing him towards medical danger.
After Jason suffers an injury from a fall while Leigh is out of town, he’s placed under the care of a legal guardian, Janet. Although she initially comes across as helpful, things quickly go south. Before they know it, she places him in a nursing home, “auctioning off his house,” and all of his possessions under the claim that the funds are required for his care, according to the official synopsis.
Since there have been far-and-wide debates and discussions about guardianships and conservatorships in recent times due to high-profile cases coming to light, it’s natural to be curious whether The Bad Guardian is inspired by a true story. However, executive producer Elizabeth Stephens has clarified that it is not based on a single, specific story.
Instead, the movie takes inspiration from several real-life accounts of exploitation and abuse, serving as a critique of a system designed to protect and safeguard vulnerable people. The Bad Guardian relies on cases Stephens came to know about from headlines and from people from organisations fighting against such cases of guardianship abuse.
In a conversation with Tamba Bay 28 in May 2024, Stephens said, “Every single turn of events is true. It’s all real… this is the stuff that really happens… They get into the system, and then, as you know, it’s almost impossible to get out.” She added, “It’s just shocking. Anybody that I watched the film with, they all talk back to the screens, and they look at me and say, ‘No, this couldn’t happen. No.’”
Meanwhile, in a separate interview with Storius Magazine in June 2024, Myers doubled down, sharing that “everything that happens in the film is something that victims of guardianship abuse have experienced.”
So, even though The Bad Guardian ship doesn’t draw from a particular incident, the story is shaped by several such accounts of horrific guardianship abuse. Hence, if you still haven’t caught up on the movie, this is your sign.
