Is ‘Teach You a Lesson’ returning for a second season?
The K-drama storm on Netflix is picking up pace by the minute, and currently, the eye of the storm is none other than the action school drama series, Teach You a Lesson.
Directed by Hon Jong-chan and based on the Naver webtoon Get Schooled by Chae Yong-taek and Han Ga-ram, the action K-drama follows a government task force called the Educational Rights Protection Bureau that steps in to reform broken schools, combat rampant bullying, negligent parents, and corrupt administrators.
Teach You a Lesson unfolds primarily in a society where teacher authority has completely collapsed, with youth legislation shielding aggressive and violent teens, wealthy and influential parents who enable brutal bullying and extortion.
The Netflix series concludes with Na Hwa-jin and ERPB pulling back the curtain on the web of corruption and abuse plaguing the education system. And just as the motives of the bureau come into clear focus, the series reveals how Choi Ga-yoon’s tragic death ultimately birthed the mission, shouldered by Choi Gang-seok and Hwa-jin.
ERPB was conceived out of a deeply personal desire to pursue justice. However, in the process, it evolved into a broader mission, not only to protect students and teachers alike, but to eradicate systemic failure from the roots.
While the season finale culminates in wrapping up the major conflicts surrounding ERPB and its incredibly controversial mission to put an end to school violence that has been rotting the academic system from the inside, it leaves viewers hanging with a burning question: Is Teach You a Lesson returning for a second season?
Well, Netflix hasn’t officially renewed the South Korean action drama for a second season yet. But that’s more likely because the streamer is still weighing in the factors that potentially contribute towards continuation. As is tradition with Netflix, it examines viewership numbers and completion rates of its shows before greenlighting them for a follow-up. So, Teach You a Lesson is expected to follow in the footsteps.
But since the ERPB’s mission extends far beyond a solitary case of school violence, there’s plenty of room to investigate and take on new cases at different schools. By now, it’s crystal clear that the organisation is steadfast in securing the balance within academic institutions, which leaves a lot of scope for additional storylines to be addressed within the same universe.
So, fans might have to wait a little to get the final word from Netflix; until then, tune into the first season of Teach You a Lesson, now streaming.
