Is ‘Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole’ returning for a second season on Netflix?

Within a day of Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole’s Netflix premiere globally, the adaptation has set a benchmark of its own, debuting with a rare, perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating.

Created by Jo Nesbø, the gripping whodunit adapts The Devil Star, the fifth book of the Norwegian author’s Harry Hole novels, taking viewers on a puzzling ride, where the famed antihero confronts double trouble – a serial killer rampage across Oslo and a corrupt adversary, Captain Tom Waaler.

Netflix infamously specialises in unconventional detectives. However, what sets Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole apart from ordinary mysteries is the abundance of red herrings that force viewers to abandon food, sleep, work, and socialisation until they get the answer they have been searching for.

While the conclusion of the first season of Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole brings closure about the killer on the loose, also providing answers about whether Harry’s suspicion about workplace corruption, the question that it leaves burning in every mind is: will the thriller return for a second season?

Netflix hasn’t renewed Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole for a second season yet, and the renewal will likely depend on the reception of the first season. According to Øystein Karlsen, although Nesbø has over 10 novels in the Harry Hole book series, with another on the way, decisions regarding the second season rely on viewer interest, which so far doesn’t seem disappointing.

“Jo and I have talked about it, and we do have an idea for what could be a sequel or which book would be best,” he says. “Now, it’s just up to the audience whether they like it or not” (via TIME Magazine)

In a recent conversation with Variety, Working Title co-chair Eric Fellner spoke of their choice of adapting the fifth book of the novel series in the first season of the Netflix thriller, saying, “This was the story that Jo really wanted to tell, and he felt it would be a great way to start what hopefully might be a number of series. So he’s taken a few bits and pieces from various other books and then, if people like this and they want to invite us back for more, then we’ll find another one to do.”

Meanwhile, in a separate interview with Mirror publishers Reach Plc, the creator said, “No plans yet [for a season two].” Nesbø clarified that they’re focused on “getting this TV series out to the audience,” which they put three years of hard work into. “So, just the thought of starting all over again right now is a bit premature, and we’re so exhausted right now that we want a vacation.”

But Harry Hole actor Tobias Santelmann replied, “I’m ready. You might be exhausted,” to which Nesbø added, “You’re ready? Then I’m ready too for season two.” Although they didn’t reveal where a potential second season could be headed, considering the cast and creators are more than ready, one can at least keep their hopes up for some good news.
