Is ‘Cash Queens’ based on a true story?

Netflix just dropped an eight-episode heist dramedy series, Cash Queens, on the platform, and the Internet is clearly losing it.

While a lot of that credit goes to its stranger-than-fiction premise, is Cash Queens somehow based on a true story? As it turns out, it is!

Co-created by Carine Prevot and Olivier Rosemberg, best known for their works in Young Millionaires and Family Business, Cash Queens follows five female friends desperately in need of cash. They join forces to loot a local bank, hoping it will change their lives and situations forever. However, to ensure the plan doesn’t backfire, they first have to come up with a way to quickly escape with the stolen money.

Cash Queens kicks off when a single mom, Rosalie, comes to learn that she and her children have 30 euros to survive every week if they want to clear off her incarcerated husband’s debt. As a result, she thinks it through and decides to rob €100,000 from the bank where she works as a receptionist. Once the mission is successful, Rosalie plans to pay off the debt and finally live the life she always dreamed of.

When Rosalie’s best friend, the chaotic message therapist Kim, learns about the plan, she joins in as well, hoping to use the money to make her own dream come true of opening a salon. Then comes Rosalie’s cousin, Alex, who wants to use her architecture skills for their plan. Finally, they also rope in Sofia, another single mom desperately in need of financial assistance to renovate her house following social services’ warning.

Although Sophia is hesitant at first, since her brother is a police officer, she joins in when she loses her job. As they finalise their plot, to make the heist more intimidating, they disguise themselves as men with fake beards and voice modifiers. But during a test run, it occurs to them that they also need a getaway car, which pulls in Kim’s client Chloe, whose husband happens to be the town’s mayor.

With the plan in place, the newly formed group warms up for the seemingly impossible job. But the question is: do they have it in them to pull this heist off? Well, that’s what Cash Queens on Netflix is all about.

As for those curious about its real-life inspiration, Cash Queens on Netflix is actually inspired by the Gang des Amazones – five women who looted seven banks in the South of France from 1989.

So, if you’re still thinking whether to watch Cash Queens, this could be the only trigger you probably need to hit the play button.
