Is ’17 Again’ actually just creepy?
Everyone loves the fantastical allure of fiction, kids and adults alike. Although the premise may differ, fantasy flights are irresistible regardless of age. Wherever there is fantasy, the possibilities are endless. In fact, the real seeps into the reel every now and then. But what would become of the world if it were the other way round? Well, something like 17 Again, currently streaming on Netflix.
Certain truths are impermeable. For instance, no matter how many beauty products claim to reverse age, you can’t turn back the clock. But the teen fantasy comedy, 17 Again, did it seamlessly. Although people don’t really have a genie at their disposal to make the impossible possible, even if, for the sake of it, there were to be the thinnest likelihood, wouldn’t it be creepy and concerning?
For those out of the loop and unsure of what we’re getting at, 17 Again follows a 37-year-old man, Mike, who transforms into his 17-year-old self by happenstance. Before the transformation, Mike’s life was marred by disappointments. With his high school sweetheart filing for divorce, his professional life on the edge, and him on the verge of estrangement from his kids, it’s perceived that the chance accident was actually a guardian angel who gave Mike a second shot at life.
As the story unfolds, 17-year-old Mike does what he would do at that age. He enrols in high school as Mark Gold and plans to win the basketball scholarship to go to college. But what he does immediately is to befriend Alex, his own son. Alex’s estrangement from Mike isn’t explained at first. But when he gets into Alex’s life as someone of his own age, he discovers his son’s struggles as a victim of bullying.
The proximity also offers Mike a perspective on his daughter Maggie’s love life. Not only does Stan disrespect her, but he also bullies Alex. Initially, Mike believes the accident was meant to better his life. But now, he realises his true mission: to help his children. 17 Again showcases two interwoven POVs. It explores themes of identity, self-discovery, and second chances. When it comes to the question of creepiness, certain aspects of the movie are indeed uncomfortable.
When Mike throws a party to celebrate a basketball win at Ned’s house, he wakes up to Maggie trying to seduce him. While he timely intervenes, it highlights the bizarre possibilities of fantasy when it slips into reality. Moreover, Mike clearly struggles to resist his desires for Scarlet despite the taboo around it. Although the relationship is layered and complicated, it might give the ick to some.
The age gap and power dynamics between Mike and his children may be awkward in translation. However, since 17 Again is generally light-hearted and comedic, the creepiness is still doable and keeps the allure of fiction intact. 17 Again was dropped on Netflix on July 1st, 2025.
