Inside the Trustor Scandal is a Netflix true-crime documentary that details the 1997 Swedish Trustor financial fraud through an unprecedented interview with the criminal architect, Joachim Posener, who emerges from the shadows after nearly three decades of hiding.

Directed by Karin af Klintberg, the movie chronicles one of the biggest economic frauds in Swedish history, involving the illegal acquisition of investment firm Trustor in 1997. The firm was reportedly purchased using the company’s own funds in a deal inked with a British lord from the Guinness family.

The chief suspect behind the true crime at the centre of Inside the Trustor Scandal was Posener, who vanished into thin air for almost 30 years to avoid accountability and prison. In the Netflix Original documentary, Klintberg and her team offer never-before-seen access to the actual story and the subsequent investigation via interviews with law enforcement officials, journalists, and those closely involved.

But in a move that probably no one expected, the filmmaker tracks Posener himself, ultimately giving spectators a sense of closure on the case that has raised questions for decades. Before this, he only appeared once for an interview on the Swedish documentary series 45 minuter in 2004, where he maintained top-notch secrecy. While the interview took place at an anonymous location in Europe, he chose to hide his face.

Although Inside the Trustor Scandal also takes a secretive approach with undisclosed locations across Europe, Posener does unmask himself this time despite initial refusal.

The Netflix Original documentary offers in-depth insights into how Posener attempted to pull off a scam worth 600million SEK alongside long-term associate Thomas Jisander and financier Peter Mattsson, notably using Jonathan Guinness, AKA Lord Moyne, as the frontman to give the plot legitimacy. The fraudulent scheme was an inevitable success, which paved the way for more business opportunities for Posener, including the ambitious acquisition of Wilson.

Joachim Posener lived in hiding for nearly three decades to avoid prison before Klintberg tracked him at a palatial apartment in Monaco. The criminal allegations expired in 2007, and Posener chose to close the civil disputes later that year with a settlement of 1.5million SEK. However, he never confessed to the crimes. In December 2009, he reportedly met with Swedish prosecutors of his own will to clear remaining charges.

As of today, Posener is a free man. However, according to Sweden Herald in February 2026, he was arrested on suspicion of filming Norrtälje prison without permission as Inside the Trustor Scandal was taking shape.
