Inside Netflix’s new ‘PUBG’ live-action series with Donald Glover set to star and direct
Hold the bloody phone, because Netflix has just announced a live-action PUBG series, and of all the people in Hollywood they could’ve handed this colossal gaming franchise to, they’ve reached out to Donald Glover. Yes, the Atlanta creator is writing and directing the adaptation, and he is starring in the damn thing as well.
And we are talking about ‘PUBG: Battlegrounds’ here, the 2017 gaming juggernaut that helped turn battle royale into a worldwide obsession and sold over 75 million copies before going free-to-play.
Netflix getting its hands on a franchise of this magnitude is obviously enormous news in itself, but putting Glover behind the camera has got them the exact attention from the gaming community they were aiming for. And as if this isn’t enough, Donald’s brother Stephen Glover is getting involved as a writer and executive producer.
But there’s a catch, because as exciting as the announcement is, Netflix hasn’t revealed what Glover’s plans are with the source material, and adapting PUBG comes with a rather fascinating problem. So, here’s the lowdown.
What will Netflix’s PUBG live-action series be about?
Now, PUBG doesn’t exactly hand its writers a ready-made screenplay, does it? And for those who’ve never had the chance to interact with the game, its premise revolves around up to 100 players dropping onto a battlefield and fighting to become the last survivor as the playable area shrinks.
Fantastic material for an action thriller, granted, but turning that into a television drama people will care about is another kettle of fish.
And before you start picturing Glover running across Erangel in a Level 3 helmet, Netflix hasn’t revealed a synopsis, so whether the series will recreate the game’s battle royale format or take another approach is anyone’s guess.
Who will star in the series?
Donald Glover is the only confirmed cast member, although Netflix hasn’t revealed which character he will play. He is also writing and directing, with Stephen Glover joining him on the writing team.
Krafton’s entertainment subsidiary LV3H is involved in production, alongside executive producers from NEON TV and Gilga. The remaining cast is yet to be announced.
When will Netflix’s PUBG series be released?
Netflix hasn’t announced a release date or filming schedule yet, and the project remains in development, so don’t go expecting a trailer to appear next week.
And with Glover calling the shots, the bigger question isn’t when PUBG will arrive, but what the hell he’s planning to do with a game where everyone is trying to kill everyone else.
