Idris Elba returns as Luther in a new Netflix movie
You are telling us Idris Elba is putting the coat back on, and Netflix is bringing Luther back for real? And this time it’s going to be an actual feature film with him, Alice, and Schenk all in the same bloody universe again? Yeah, no, this is what we call real television. This is what we cancel plans for. This is what gets the timeline shaking.
We are getting a second movie. A full follow-up to Luther: The Fallen Sun, and it is not just Idris Elba making a comeback, because Ruth Wilson is also back as Alice Morgan, and Dermot Crowley is returning as Schenk, and if you have even the slightest idea of how intense that trio is, you already know the streets of London are not going to be safe for long. People have been holding on to that character for years. It is so unserious because Luther is not just another gritty detective; he is the guy who walks into a case already damaged and makes it worse (in a good way).
And the fact that the original director, Jamie Payne, and creator Neil Cross are also on board means this is not going to be some lighter reboot or clean sequel. They are going in with the same people who made Luther feel heavy and impossible to forget, and it already sounds like they are ready to break him again.
Neil literally said these characters are not just characters to him… they are family, and that he never stops wondering where they are or what horrors are waiting in the dark while Luther is off the grid, and that whole energy just tells you that this new movie is going to go deeper. Get ready to be broken from the inside because when people write stories like that, you know they are not holding back.
Also, can we talk about the actual plot? Because apparently, London is being hit by a wave of brutal murders, and the only person who can deal with it is Luther, and guess what, the people bringing him back into the game are doing it secretly because literally no one wants him there, and yet no one else can stop what is coming. Sounds like a setup for pure carnage and moral dilemmas, right? You will most probably also get betrayals and obsession, pushing everyone to the edge; then, what even are we doing here?
And in case you needed more reasons to scream, the new cast also includes Stephen Dillane from The Outrun, Anya Chalotra from The Witcher, Kyle Soller from Andor, Ian Hart from The Mosquito Coast, and Niamh Algar from Raised by Wolves, and Netflix is not even done announcing everyone yet, so just imagine what they are still holding back.
Luther is coming back. Idris Elba is coming back. And London is not ready, but neither are you.
