Idris Elba joins the cast for Netflix’s ‘Extraction 2’

Luther star Idris Elba has been announced as a member of the Extraction 2 cast. The highly anticipated movie sequel will arrive on Friday, June 16th, and sees Chris Hemsworth return to his role as contract killer Tyler Rake, who was inches from death at the end of the first instalment.

In Extraction 2, we follow the Rake, who has returned from the brink of death and embarks on yet another death-defying mission. “After barely surviving his grievous wounds from his mission in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Tyler Rake is back, and his team is ready to take on their next mission,” the official synopsis reads.

Netflix has also released a short teaser clip including Idris Elba (see below). Elba and Hemsworth are joined in the cast by Golshifteh Farahani, who returns as private military contractor Nik Khan and Adam Bessa, who portrays Yaz Khan.

It was recently revealed that, for one of the action-packed scenes, director Sam Hargraves created a 21-minute prison-break sequence to appear as a single, unbroken take.

Speaking to Empire Online, Hargraves revealed that Hemsworth was set on fire “over and over” to get one of the scenes right. “For me, the image of Chris Hemsworth beating the shit out of a bunch of prisoners while on fire in the snow was something that I couldn’t pass up. And hats off to Chris. It wasn’t CG fire. And he had to do it over and over.”

Talking to Netflix, Sam said of Extraction 2: “The goal was to dive deeper into the backstory of Tyler Rake and find out what makes him tick.

“We felt we owed it to the audience to give them more insight into what it is that drives him. So, we introduce some new characters that bring his past into greater focus and learn more about where he’s coming from and why he’s doing what he’s doing.”
