There is a reason why Harlan Coben adaptations keep ending up at the top of the streaming charts, and it’s super simple: The man never lets you settle. Every time you think you have got the mystery worked out, he thickens the plot. Every time you reckon you have figured out who is telling porkies, another secret emerges out of nowhere. That’s exactly what happens in I Will Find You.

Let’s talk about the setup first. David Burroughs is serving life for murdering his three-year-old son, Matthew. The evidence pointed at him, and the courts convicted him. As far as everybody else was concerned, the case was finished years ago.

Only David never accepted that. For five years, he insisted he didn’t do it. Five years of nobody believing him. Then all of a sudden, a photograph turns up and changes absolutely everything. Rachel Mills, who is David’s former sister-in-law, comes across an image that appears to show Matthew alive years after he was supposed to have died. Now if Matthew’s alive, then David couldn’t have killed him. And if David didn’t kill him, somebody has gone to an awful lot of trouble to make sure everybody thought he did.

Before long, David’s escaped prison, the police are chasing him, and every answer only seems to create another question. The deeper he digs, the murkier everything becomes. At a certain point, nearly everybody starts looking guilty. And that’s exactly what I Will Find You wants.

The constant uncertainty around Matthew’s disappearance drives everything. Every revelation feels like it could flip the whole story on its head. As it turns out, that’s exactly what happens.

Who really took Matthew?

For most of the series, it feels like the answer is going to lead somewhere massive. The investigation keeps pointing towards powerful people behind the scenes. Even mob connections start entering the picture. But then comes the finale and reveals something nobody was really looking at. The answer has been much closer all along.

The person responsible for Matthew’s disappearance is Hayden Payne, and this twist is mind-blowing. Not because Hayden’s some terrifying mastermind hiding in the shadows. Quite the opposite. For most of the story, he has stood right there alongside everybody else. He is involved in the search, supporting Rachel and helping push the investigation forward. In a lot of ways, he is one of the last people viewers would expect to be responsible.

But behind all of that sits a much darker truth. Years before any of this happened, Hayden became obsessed with Rachel after their relationship ended. Eventually, that obsession became tied up with Matthew. Through a fertility clinic connected to his family, Hayden arranged for his own DNA to be used during Cheryl’s treatment.

He convinces himself that Matthew belongs to him. And it’s just inside his own head. And once that belief takes hold, it ends up destroying lives. Believing Matthew was his son, Hayden orchestrates an elaborate kidnapping. Matthew is taken away and raised under a completely different identity as a boy called Theo. To make sure nobody discovers the truth, Hayden goes even further. He substitutes the body of a terminally ill orphan and creates evidence that points investigators directly at David.

The final twist changes everything

As shocking as Hayden’s motives are, the series still isn’t finished throwing surprises at you. Because then another secret comes to light, and this one has been buried inside the Payne family for years.

Hayden’s mother, Gertrude Payne, knew far more than she ever let on. Long before the events of the finale, she had arranged a DNA test and discovered something huge. Hayden wasn’t Matthew’s biological father.

Now, you’d think that would be the moment somebody came up and stopped all this from happening. Instead, the truth gets buried. Gertrude chooses to protect the Payne family name rather than expose what has really happened. And in doing so, she allows Hayden’s obsession to keep growing unchecked. By the end, the series makes it pretty clear that her silence caused almost as much damage as Hayden’s actions themselves.

Eventually, everything comes crashing together at the Payne estate. David, Rachel and FBI agent Sarah Greer race to rescue Matthew before it’s too late. By this point, Greer has put two and two together and has enough evidence to confirm what viewers have suspected for a while.

By the time the dust settles, David’s fully exonerated. Matthew comes home, and Rachel turns the entire ordeal into a book, and both she and David finally get the chance to build lives that aren’t defined by what happened to them.

For a story that starts with a father accused of murdering his own child, it actually ends on a surprisingly hopeful note. The mystery gets solved, and David gets his freedom back.

But the biggest surprise isn’t that Matthew was alive all along. It’s that the person responsible was never some hidden figure lurking in the background. He was standing right there from the start, helping with the investigation and knowing the truth the entire time.
