‘How to Get to Heaven from Belfast’ ending explained: What happened to Greta?
Netflix viewers take mystery thrillers very seriously, and How to Get to Heaven from Belfast is definitely no exception.
Coming from the Derry Girls creator, How to Get to Heaven from Belfast is Netflix’s latest comedy thriller about a close-knit group of three friends – Saoirse, Dara, and Robyn – now in their 30s, who embark on their most adventurous odyssey yet after learning about the death of their fourth estranged member, Greta.
Once inseparable, their friendship unfortunately ended in high school following a tragic accident that left the girls out of touch with Greta. Back then, Greta claimed that an older man had been stalking her, who she alleged was a sexual predator. Then one night, the girls stumbled across Greta right next to the man’s dead body. According to Greta, the man was ill-intended, and it was an act of self-defence.
Although none of them was prepared for the situation, desperate to help their friend, everybody assisted Greta in burying the body, still unaware that the trauma of the incident would completely implode their friendship. But when the girls actually arrive at the wake, they discover that it isn’t Greta’s body in the casket. Then, what exactly happened to Greta?
What happened to Greta in How to Get to Heaven from Belfast?
When the trio finds out that the body in the casket isn’t Greta’s in How to Get to Heaven from Belfast, they embark on a cross-country journey to find the answers to their questions. As they dig deeper for answers, they come to learn that Greta actually adopted several aliases throughout her life and is now involved in an underground relocation scheme, akin to a type of witness protection program.
Greta originally hails from an abusive, rural commune called Heaven’s Veil, where she was raised with a sister called Jodie. After committing a ruthless atrocity, the girls were subsequently put under the care of an experimental psychologist, who inflicted relentless abuse on them. A flashback scene from the day Greta allegedly died reveals that Jodie had finally tracked her down with the intention of revealing a secret that could destroy her sister’s life.
Jodie even grabbed Greta on top of the stairs, resulting in a brief altercation until Greta pushed her, knocking her down the stairs and accidentally killing her. In an attempt to shield her family, Greta herself signed up for the secret relocation program with the help of her husband, who faked her death using Jodie’s body. As a result, when Saoirse, Robyn, and Dara head out to uncover the truth, they barely have an idea of what’s really going on.
Towards the conclusion of the series, Greta starts having second thoughts about being relocated and assuming a new identity. Filled with regrets about her past, the more she misses her family, the more she realises that she cannot go through the plan and eventually escapes. But if reconnection is what she seeks, she must first confront Heaven’s Veil, where it all started.
Simultaneously, as the trip pieces together her history, they also head towards the old Heaven Veil site. However, it turns out that they aren’t the only ones. Three members from the relocation group are also making their way towards Heaven’s Veil to finish off Greta, since anyone who tries to leave the program is simply ordered to be eliminated for jeopardising the secrecy and safety of the members.
