How Leonardo DiCaprio made the ‘BECKHAM’ docuseries happen

Scheduled for release on Netflix on October 4th, 2023, BECKHAM is a four-part documentary series directed by Oscar-winner Fisher Stevens. The docuseries delves deep into the captivating journey of David Beckham, one of the most iconic figures in both sports and pop culture.

In a surprising turn of events, Stevens, whom you might know better as Hugo Baker from Succession, has revealed how Hollywood heavyweight Leonardo DiCaprio played the role of matchmaker, connecting Stevens with the legendary footballer, essentially making the docuseries BECKHAM happen.

Stevens disclosed to The Guardian that the Killers of the Flower Moon star played a pivotal role in facilitating the collaboration. He recounted how Beckham, in conversation with DiCaprio, sought recommendations for a director for the documentary. DiCaprio, having worked closely with Stevens on the climate crisis documentary Before The Flood, and having watched Stevens’ emotionally charged 2021 Apple TV+ drama starring Justin Timberlake, Palmer, suggested Stevens as the ideal candidate to capture Beckham’s life story.

Stevens recounted, “David was hanging out with Leo, and asked him who he should get. He recommended me! David watched Before the Flood then Palmer that I directed, and saw something he liked – the emotion, I guess.”

Fisher Stevens, known for his documentary work that includes the Oscar-winning dolphin hunting movie, The Cove, initially had reservations about taking on the project. However, the encouragement from colleagues and the Succession showrunner Jesse Armstrong, who recognised the immense potential of BECKHAM’s narrative, ultimately swayed his decision. Armstrong pointed out to Stevens, “You cannot not do this. This is a great story.”

Apart from his illustrious football career, the BECKHAM documentary also promises to provide viewers with an intimate behind-the-scenes look at the lives of David Beckham and his multi-talented wife, Victoria Beckham. Beyond their celebrity status, the series will also delve into the other arenas of their life. From his successful stint with Manchester United to the infamous red card incident during the 1998 World Cup match against Argentina, as well as Beckham’s foray into fashion and business, along with his role as co-owner of Inter Miami CF, are explored in the documentary. The recent signing of soccer legend Lionel Messi by Inter Miami CF adds another layer of intrigue to Beckham’s ongoing journey.
