‘Home’: the animated comedy climbing the Netflix charts

We have got a fun one for your new Netflix watch. Home is back, and it is not just sitting quietly on the platform. It has climbed all the way to number five on Netflix’s Global most popular movies. Yep, the 2015 animated comedy is suddenly a worldwide hit again, and honestly, it makes sense.

This film totally deserves to be back, and it is every now and then. And why not? It is colourful, it is silly, it is heartwarming, and it is exactly the kind of movie you throw on when you want a good vibe without stressing your brain.

If you haven’t seen it or maybe forgot about it, Home is DreamWorks at its most playful. The story follows Oh, an awkward little alien voiced by Jim Parsons (yes, Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory). He belongs to the Boov, a species that invades Earth and “relocates” humans while moving in. Oh, being the clumsy misfit that he is, he accidentally tips off the enemy and ends up on the run.

Enter Tip, a human girl voiced by Rihanna, who just wants to find her mom. How unlikely is this duo? Parsons and Rihanna! Two of the sassiest people to exist. This unlikely duo team up for a globe-spanning adventure that is equal parts goofy and genuinely sweet.

And honestly, the cast is a flex. Jim Parsons nails the awkward, too-literal alien comedy. Rihanna not only voices Tip but also delivers bangers for the soundtrack (remember “Towards the Sun”?). Add in Steve Martin as the overconfident Boov leader and Jennifer Lopez as Tip’s mom, and it is a stacked lineup. No wonder the movie still feels alive ten years later. It’s a time capsule of mid-2010s pop culture wrapped in neon animation.

Now, is Home the best movie DreamWorks has ever made? Maybe not. It didn’t hit Shrek or How to Train Your Dragon levels of acclaim. But what it did do was carve out its own fanbase. Kids loved the slapstick humour, parents didn’t mind rewatching it, and the Rihanna factor gave it instant cool points. And that’s probably why it’s thriving again on Netflix. Families are looking for something fun to stream together, and Home checks every box. Plus, global audiences always respond well to animated comedies with big, colourful visuals. It is easy to understand, easy to love, and easy to rewatch.

So why is Home trending now? Our guess is family movie nights. Parents scrolling for something safe but not boring. Meanwhile, kids are obsessed with aliens and slapstick, and Rihanna’s voice adds extra sparkle. It is a recipe that works in 2025 just as well as it did in 2015. Sometimes Netflix’s Top 10 is full of crime thrillers and heavy dramas, but every now and then, a feel-good animated comedy sneaks in and steals the spotlight.

And we are here for it. If you need something light, funny, and a little nostalgic, Home deserves that number five spot.
