Hit Netflix show ‘Emily in Paris’ confirmed for season fifth

The easiest way to guarantee a renewal on a streaming service that can often be incredibly quick to wield the axe is to draw in bumper viewing figures, a feat that Emily in Paris has been doing since the very start.

In the grand scheme of television, five seasons isn’t a massive amount when plenty of shows have endured for decades, but it’s a number not many Netflix original dramas have been able to reach. Lily Collins has joined the club, though, with the platform pulling the trigger less than a week after the second half of the fourth run premiered.

Nobody would rightfully claim that Emily in Paris is going to be remembered as one of Netflix’s best-ever originals. However, that doesn’t really matter when subscribers can’t resist the lure of watching the title character strut her stuff on the continent and become entangled in a number of personal, professional, and romantic misadventures.

Collins did earn a Golden Globe nomination for the first season in the ‘Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy’ category, in the same year Emily in Paris made the shortlist for ‘Best Television Series – Drama’, but even then, it was beset by allegations that voters had been schmoozed in order to cast their votes in the show’s direction.

Emily in Paris may not be remembered like The Sopranos, but it’s certainly a popular programme nonetheless. When the news was made official, creator Darren Star shared with Tudum that “we’re thrilled with the incredible response to this season of Emily in Paris and excited to return for a fifth to continue Emily’s adventures in Rome and Paris.”

The fourth season saw Emily strike up a romance in the Italian capital, and season five will continue flitting between the two nations, but the series won’t be changing its name to Emily in Paris and Occasionally Rome for obvious reasons.

“Emily’s going to have a presence in Rome,” Star said. “It doesn’t mean she’s not going to be in Paris, but she’s going to have a presence in Rome.” The decision was made to freshen things up and “stay ahead of the audience and take them to unexpected places,” with Paris clearly not big enough to contain a fashionista of such magnitude.

Netflix has developed a habit of announcing renewals and then dropping the bombshell that the next season will be the last, but seeing as Emily in Paris hasn’t been lumped into that conversation, it stands to reason the streamer is keeping the door open for plenty more to come.
