Netflix is about to introduce a whole new audience to Ghost when Power comes on the platform this November. Once people get into it, they will expeditiously understand why the show caused so much shouting at the TV when it first aired.

The series premiered on Starz on June 7th, 2014, before ending on February 9th, 2020, after six seasons and 63 episodes, so there is plenty there for anyone who fancies getting stuck into a crime drama rather than watching something forgettable and moving on.

Created by Courtney A. Kemp, Power follows James “Ghost” St Patrick, played by Omari Hardwick, who presents himself as a successful businessman running Truth, a Manhattan nightclub that makes it look as though he has left his old life behind.

That image is a load of cobblers, though, because Ghost is still running a drug operation with his childhood friend Tommy Egan (Joseph Sikora), and the strain of keeping both lives going is what gives the story its edge.

Ghost wants to go straight because he believes the club can offer him a future that does not end in prison or a grave, but getting out is not as simple as handing in your notice and pretending you are done. Whenever he tries to move into legitimate business, his criminal ties pull him back.

Then comes the return of Angela Valdes, which makes the whole situation dishevelled. She was Ghost’s school sweetheart, but is now a federal prosecutor whose investigation might choke them.

Naturi Naughton plays Tasha, Ghost’s wife, while Michael Rainey Jr. stars as their son, Tariq. Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson appears as Kanan Stark and also worked as an executive producer.

Power became one of Starz’s biggest successes and later grew into a franchise, including Power Book II: Ghost, Power Book III: Raising Kanan and Power Book IV: Force. So when the original comes on Netflix, remember, you’ll be opening doors to a much bigger story.
