'Heartstopper' awes fans with a surprise Oscar actress cameo

Netflix’s recent adaptation of Alice Oseman’s LGBTQ+ graphic novel Hearstopper has awed fans who are praising its diverse cast and representation. Now, a surprise cameo from a brilliant Oscar-winning actress has left fans astonished and happy.

The show revolves around Charlie and Nick’s blossoming friendship that culminates into eventual romance. Although they are polar opposites in their respective personalities, their unlikely friendship is overwhelmed by mutual feelings of love and affection.

This journey of self-discovery, acceptance and love helps them examine and find their raw and vulnerable selves. The show stars Joe Locke as Charlie Spring, Kit Connor as Nick Nelson, Corinna Brown as Tara Jones, Kizzy Edgell as Darcy Olsson, Yasmin Finney as Elle Argent and William Gao as Tao Xu.

Directed by Euros Lyn, the series has become the fourth most-watched series on Netflix UK and has been praised by fans for its warm and beautiful premise.

However, in a surprising turn of events, Award-winning actress Olivia Colman appeared as Nick’s mother in the series which served as welcomed delight for fans. Colman is known for her phenomenal performances, most recently seen in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Netflix Original film The Lost Daughter alongside Jessie Buckley, Dakota Johnson etc.

She is supportive and warm to Nick when he comes out to her. Colman adds the correct amount of emotions, making the particular scene delicate and more realistic.

According to the executive producer Patrick Walters, it was quite difficult to get an actress as busy as Colman to be a part of their series. He talked about the “grand idea” they had for Colman playing Nick’s mother in the show. Although he initially thought it also to be “the silliest idea ever”, director Euros Lyn managed to convince Olivia Colman.

Walters said, “We sent her some excerpts from the scripts, and the comics as well. I think it was Euros, actually, who reached out to her, because they’d worked together before. And she said yes! I 100% thought this was not going to happen.”

He added, “It was such a shock when she said yes. I remember speaking to her agent, and just being like, ‘Really?’ It was unbelievable. But she’s amazing, and she was so lovely.”
